 You guys watch espn Friday night fights tonight? Oscar was so happy like a little boy when he was explaining how he cannot believe that he was seated right next to Iron Mike Tyson.

Shows you even a retired Mike Tyson is more popular than Oscar, Floyd and Pacquiao all combine.

I saw that. What I found most interesting was the fact that Oscar mentioned both Pac, and Mike, while being interviewed by Teddy Atlas. I kept expecting to see Teddy have a stroke from mentioning two fighters that he's not particularly fond of.

He can't help but wonder what Iron Mike looks like in heels.

Mike is a global icon. Fact.

Nobody transcended the sport like Mike did, other than Ali.

its seems like that would be a natural, they have both overcome some of the same struggles outside of the ring.I would love to see both of them succeed in this next chapter of their careers.

I would also add Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson.

    There is no debate.

During his time there is no one more iconic than Jack Dempsey. He was the first to earn $1 million gate and did so repeatedly. She ushered in modern boxing, taking fights out of the back rooms and barges and turning then into events for which stadiums were built. His fights with Carpentier and Firpo were international events, his vanquished foes became heroes in their homelands. At the time Dempsey was voted the most recognized athlete beating out Babe Ruth.

You cannot say with an informed straight face anyone transcended the support more in their time than Joe Louis. One cannot doubt, or overestimate the international attention and interest Louis' fights with Max Schmeling received. Both Louis and Robinson played important roles serving as role models during integration. Numerous facilities, including, the Joe Louis Arena, gives some indication as to both the popularity and transcendence of Joe Louis.

Jack Johnson so transcended his sport that Congress and the President drafted in past the Mann act.

While Marciano and Tyson were popular during theie time one cannot reasonably say that they transcended mere sport more than Dempsey, or Louis

Marciano, Ali and Tyson are still the most frequent names anyone would mention while taking about the history of boxing. You can ask 100 random people across the world about Dempsey or Johnson, and hope to see a couple of them being familiar with the names (at best). Ali, Rocky Marciano and Tyson are literally known everywhere by almost everyone.

The discussion was who transcended their sport. The fact that many people are ignorant of history and that Tyson and Marciano are both much more recent and in a time which media was much more available does not address who had the bigger impact or who was relatively more recognized during their time. Now, more people might recognize George Patton but that does not make him Genghis Khan.

Was foam pouring out of both sides of Teddy's mouth?

This reminds me of a scene in Mike's book, where he says that the FBI invaded his house and confiscated all his home-made pornos. And later on when he was talking to one of the female FBI agents, "off the record" she told him how impressed she was with his performances on the tapes.
