Ive just seen highlights from round 1 and Martinez was knocked down (although from what I saw it looked like Cotto pulled his head down and pushed) then after that Martinez couldnt even stand despite not looking that hurt Im amazed he went to the 10th with an injury like that though, dont know what they were thinking letting their fighter go into the ring in that condition and its a sad way to see one of my favourite fighters go out of the sport although Cotto is also a favourite of mine Regardless though I hope Cotto fights a genuine middleweight next rather than drag fighters up if he plans to keep hold of that belt
martinez started the fight looking sharp...but cotto was the aggressor and landed some hard punches early in the first round. then about halfway through the first cotto caught martinez with a left hook and hurt martinez bad. cotto put martinez down the first time with a series of punches, one of which grazed the back of martinez head. then he dropped martinez two more times. I figured the fight was over, but maybe the promoters wanted to give the crowd their money's worth, especially after the lousy undercard. martinez looked ok for the most part. didn't look slow or sloppy or anything...the announcers kept saying his knee was the problem and it might have been, but cotto just seemed quicker and more aggressive and punched in combinations. cotto's defense seemed to give martinez problems too. the constant cotto left hooks landing flush to martinez head just seemed to stun martinez everytime. in the middle rounds, martinez did good, even winning a round on lederman's card. martinez was able to land a lotta good jabs and counters in the middle rounds, but cotto's speed, body punching and technique was a problem for him. martinez has been fighting a lotta europeans lately. just didn't seem to know how to handle cotto's fluid style. the knee was a factor ...but it wasn't the only factor. but it became a good excuse to stop the fight and help martinez save face...because cotto was starting to pour it on and martinez wouldn't have been able to match cotto's skill and movement.
I saw the punch that wobbled him, thing is he didnt look as hurt as you say. When you get hit hard you tend to back off and your weight transfers to your hind leg. when Martinez got caught he went to go backwards and his knee couldnt support him, as for the knockdown im still seeing it as a push/pulling the head down which should have been called a slip, not that it would have changed the fight but im nitpicking really. As for the European thing . . . . you do realised most of the top euro middleweights hit harder than Cotto right? it took him 10 rounds to beat a beyond shot Martinez
sorry but no It was clear from the opening bell that Martinez could barely walk. This was a horrendous performance from Martinez, and makes that whole HBO face-off a few weeks ago seem so silly. Martinez had absolutely no footwork. I mean yeah he showed upper body intelligence, but it was clear his knees were shot. Not only that, but his trunks were falling down the entire fight, and it looked like his trunks weighed about 500 lbs. Martinez should never have signed this fight in such a condition. Ali did better vs Holmes than Martinez did against Cotto. Pathetic!! Yeah Cotto looked good, but he had a punching bag in front of him.
This sounds more like what happened, again only saw the first round and genuinely surprised the fight went on for so long. I could give Cotto credit but to be honest I could have beat Martinez that night from what ive seen because the only person who seemed to beat him that night was himself
Martinez knee couldn't support him whenever he took any decent kind of punch, punches that wouldn't normally trouble him in the slightest. I seen a lot of people saying Cotto would have beaten him either way but for me that was like a 10% of a prime Martinez and 10% is being generous. I noticed at the start of the fight Martinez skipped around the outside of the ring obviously testing his knees out but they failed him big time, I don't even know how much credit Cotto gets for this fight.
As a cotto can who thought Martinez would KO him, I saw that from the first few seconds the movement of Martinez was not right As muh as I'm happy for cotto the lustre of the victory was removed by the condition of Martinez
not true...martinez was moving very well in the opening minutes of the fight. watch it again. he's bouncing around the ring moving away from cotto, but cotto is too fast. i'm not a cotto fan by any means. just calling it as i see it. when martinez went down the second time is when he seemed to have problems with his movement. he got caught with a left hook just before going down the third time and instantly sagged and went flatfooted... then, at the start of the second round, you could tell his legs seemed stiff and his movement was limited...but he seemed to get some of the movement back in his legs as the fight progressed. not saying the knee was not nagging him, but he wasn't lurching around or flatfooted. he just had no answer for cotto's speed, movement and combos.
That's how I feel too, I'm a fan of Cotto as well. People will no doubt call it hating or whatever but I think Curtis Stevens would have beaten Martinez last night, his knees were non existent. It's one of the biggest let downs for me of the year, was looking forward to this fight so much and then after the first KD you could see his knee was done and you knew it was one fighter against a handicapped fighter, it was basically over from that point.
He was cautious and hesitant throwing punches in case he twisted out his knees. Dude had no offence and no footwork whatsoever.
He wasn't moving very well, you could tell he was "testing his knees" you could tell subconsciously that he was unsure if his knees would hold up. He had both knees wrapped, obviously there was a problem with his knees. So yeah I watched it again and he was moving okay in the opening minutes, but he wasn't able to plant his foot and throw a punch! When he tried that later in the fight his knees buckled. You could tell all his punches were arm punches, were pushing punches, there weren't whole body punches due to the shaky knees!! he's bouncing around the ring, but he wasn't t doing anything!! He was just outboxing away from Cotto the whole fight because he couldn't plant his feet and deliver a solid punch. Something was obviously very wrong with his knees. He was bouncing all over the place, the punches that Cotto landed didn't help, but this was a fighter who clearly had shaky legs from the opening bell. He was flat footed from the opening bell. He tried to do some outboxing, but he could barely walk. Dude had a knee pad on both legs. What fight were you watching? He was lurching around the entire fight! He tried to deliver a punch in the middle rounds and his knees buckled and he fell down.
- when you see the fight you will see that the left hook that hurt martinez prior to him going down the first time did a lotta damage. - martinez did not look "beyond shot"....where did you get that from if you didn't even see the fight? as i said, lederman gave martinez a round....i think it was the 4th or 5th. if martinez was really fighting like a cripple in there it would have been over in the first or second. he came back and gave a credible account of himself, but i do believe the knee was a problem....but like i said, not the only problem.
