I used to think that years ago, however my opinion has changed as I have gotten older. You will never know the nerves, fear, excitement and disappointment which all comes with winning or losing fights. The hardest bit in boxing is before a fight IMO which im sure most boxers would agree is not a nice experience, yet is an essential part before a contest in determining how you perform. I have met plenty people who have not boxed who have a very good understanding of the sport. Some people learn a lot about boxing by being around gyms and fighters, yet they have never actually fought.

I think of all the great boxers who'd make completely ridiculous predictions or analysis, then I think of guys like the ones above or Al Hayman, Angelo Dundee, the trainers, promoters, managers, journalists, this sport is filled with and I think that maybe you just need a brain and a passion for the sport. *I like watching people get punched in the head more than I like getting punched in the head.*

I agree with you for the most part. I work with a lot of guys who watch boxing, and have tried to at various levels.

The one who watches the most boxing has never boxed... I noticed he tends to go by what commentators say, although he isnt wrong about most things, he can completely not understand many intangible aspects of the game.. and even many technical aspects.

The one who watches it the least has sparred a little, but doesnt understand the sweet science, even though he wants to. (Mayweather is his favorite fighter). He tries to fight southpaw, even though he is right handed. He understands a little more of the technique aspect then the one who has never sparred, but not really a lot. His opinions are normally off the way and extreme, as well as biased.

The one whos boxed the most has also watched a lot of boxing, he predicted Mattesya/Garcia, Mayweather/Madiana, Cotto/Martinez. So.. he is pretty good and going against the upset and being proven right. He understands styles make fights, he is a little partial to pressure fighters, so sometimes we will disagree on rounds because Ill score more for jabs then he will.

I myself have watched a lot, am on ESB everyday, and have been training for 6 years.. so I think I know everything about boxing har har <_<
