He should absolutely retire - he is shot to pieces. The warnings signs have been there over his last three fights. The only reason he fought in Saturday night's farce is he has a poor promoter who hasn't made him the money he deserves. Cotto did what Miguel Cotto had to but it was clear that Martinez's legs are gone and he can no longer fight his style.
There is no acceptable answer other than YES. Martinez is physically shot. His body has been steadily breaking down for the last 2 years, starting with the Jr. fight where he injured his knee. Had surgery, a long layoff and then an epic struggle with Murray with less than 100% legs. Last night was the straw that broke the camel's back. He had braces on BOTH knees, moved like crap from the opening bell and had terrible balance throughout the fight. He may want to fight again, but his body won't allow him. He's done. If he fights again, he's an idiot. A fighter needs to know when to hang it up and Martinez has about 20 reasons to.
The spirit was willing .. but the flesh was spongy and bruised. Actually, reminded me a lot of Tsyzu v Hatton .. old champion suddenly showing the wear and tear of the last few years all in one fight and losing their most important attributes (eg Tszyu's power and right hand, aside from the hail mary's at the start of each round ... and Martinez's power, confidence and athleticism). Martinez should definitely retire. Those legs are shot. He's got nothing left to prove and shouldn't be fighting bigger guys with more power at this point. I don't want to see him getting 'Morales'ed by lesser fighters.
Martinez is too injured to fight anymore, he knew he was finished before the fight. Now Cotto needs to get the balls to fight Golovkin as HBO wants that fight. Void will not fight a rematch with Cotto, he became afraid. Void is afraid of Pac who would knock Void out...............
He shoudl hang them up. Thanks for the memories. He was a great fighter, who, if he had been spotted earlier by a big promoter could have done so much more. Time to put his feet up.
He should come back and beat another MW contender or beltholder. Then all the ESB experts will tell us that his knee is healed and he is now unshot.
Yes he should and will. There's no point in continuing when he's suffering serious physical injuries and can't go through a proper training camp. He should have retired after Chavez.
