How come this fight never took place ?
Mike fought all the top guys of his time apart from this guy.
Was it something to do with Witherspoon's disputes with DK or was he a sparring partner like Mccall...i must admit i am not sure , but didn't think he was.
Any views on why this never happened ?

Because Whitherspoon lost his wba title to James smith.
he looked unmotivated in that one ( just after the Bruno fight )
if he had beaten Smith , Tyson would be next for him
as we all know smith fought Tyson in a stinker..

    Why didn't Witherspoon-Tyson happen?

    Bonecrusher Smith happened.

Tyson handily beat two guys that beat Witherspoon (Thomas and Bonecrusher) and beat another who lost to him (Tubbs) by split decision. Tyson would've taken Spoon out before the 6th.

If Tillis survived, so could Berbick. And Thomas. And Holmes. And Spinks. And Bruno. And Biggs. And The Truth. And Arbachakov. And Philip Holiday. And Sot Chitilada. And Dutchboy Gym. And EEk A Mouse could too.

When in shape,Witherspoon would have been tough and cagey enough to have lasted the distance with a peak Tyson. Mike would have been too busy for him, though.

More or less yes.. In any event Tyson beats the best version of Witherspoon. How long it lasts and how emphatically depends on the shape Witherspoon turns up in. Spoon could have given him a good fight when at his pinnacle. But Mike was just a class above.

This isn't a triangle theory. There are 4 fighters I just named. What does Spoon have that Tyson hasn't seen before? It would be a tough go for however long it lasts...which would be about 6 rounds.

On the other hand, Tim KO'd Tillis in 1 rd before Tyson went full 10 rds with him. Beat Bonecrusher 1st time by 11-1 scores on all cards.

After losing the title to Smith, it took Witherspoon nearly a decade to show anything like top form. The reality was for rest of the 80s (post Smith), Tim was in a court battle with DKP for the money he claimed he was owed for the Bruno fight. During this period (Tyson's peak) Witherspoon was in poor form and even for him pretty bad shape.

All true. There is very little difference between Spoon and most of the heavies of the 80's. A good solid fighter but inconsistent and not great. I think he was also a bit too slow for a fighter like Tyson in the late 80's.

It didn't happen because, like a lot of other talented heavies at the time, Tim was caught up in battles with Don King, which caused him to lose the belt to Bonecrusher Smith and never recover from it.

Witherspoon so overrated on this website. Tyson at his peak beats him easily, probably by KO. Witherspoon would have fought Tyson in 1987 but he got stopped by Bonecrusher Smith in 1 round in late 1986 for the WBA title.
