Compared to Lewis anyone would have been a breath of fresh air even Ruiz who had the slightly better legacy than Rahman.
Rahman, and not by a little either. People look at Ruiz's record and say, oh he fought all these name opponents, but they forget what he actually DID against them. In most of his fights, Ruiz either blatantly broke the rules against excessive holding (pretty much every fight against decent competition), faked "low blows" to get crucial point deductions or DQs (Thunder, Holyfield II and Johnson), or got a gift decision in a fight he clearly lost (Golota). Rahman won fights WITHIN the rules, because he had the ability to do so. Ruiz cheated his way to "victory," because he was so limited it was the only way he could win against decent fighters.
Come on man, we all know Lennox Lewis was afraid of mighty John Ruiz. Lennox could have ended that fight whenever he wanted.
Ruiz also owns the distinction of twice (*) losing a heavyweight title to a former middleweight champion.
Those former MW champs were also two of the most talented boxers of their generation.. It isn't a huge shame for Ruiz.
Ruiz's "style" is to blatantly violate the rules against excessive holding, and without the influence of Don King, he would have been appropriately disqualified in every fight he "won" against decent competition. Not only this, as others have mentioned, he shamelessly faked "low blows" in several fights to get crucial point deductions - or in the case of Kirk Johnson, a bogus DQ "win." Then, there are of course the several highly debatable decisions he received, such as the bogus draw he should have lost against Holyfield, and most egregiously against Golota, where he got the decision in a fight where he hit the canvas twice and actually landed LESS punches than the guy he supposedly "beat!!!!"atsch Ruiz is, if anything, overrated - because without King's influence, he would have never been rated in the first place, and he certainly wouldn't have been able to violate the basic rules of boxing with impunity, as he did in every fight he ever had against good fighters. Ruiz is a disgrace to the sport of boxing, a cheater and a fraud whose bogus career was a classic example of how King's corruption ruined the sport when he was a major influence.
Lewis would have taken Roy's head off. You know it. I know it. And Roy definitely knew it. Personally I think RJJ seems a cool guy so I wouldn't have wanted him to catch the beating that Lewis would have put on him.
As worded, "better legacy", you have to go with Ruiz. Were it "better fighter", despite their h2h record, then Rahman. (because let's face it, Ruiz would have suffered half a dozen more KO losses if he fought everyone on Rahman's resume: certainly Lewis, Sanders, Klitschko, and Povetkin - and probably Barrett, Puritty & Maskaev too. **** maybe even the 40 year old Berbick that young Rock couldn't put away, in the same year Tua blitzed Ruiz in seconds...)
