He was the last of the era of larger than life icons, there will never be anything like him in popular culture again, they're too many media outlets and everybody lives in their own bubble with what they like, there is no more shared experiences. Everyone talked about him, was excited everytime he fought, he felt like GGG or Kovalev do now but on a grand scale where everyone knew what you were talking about when you brought up his name. Imagine being in school and everyone in class was talking and in a state of shock when Tyson was KO'd by Douglas, you don't get that aura anymore and that's a shame. That being said you could say that he and OJ were the beginning of the end as we know it, for the Media, they realized how much money could be made exploiting the rise and fall of celebrities and it has never been the same. As far as a boxer obviously not that great but at the time from the perspective of a young teenager he seemed like the ultimate badass, and also the first one to make me realize how no one is undefeatable and how flawed people can be.
if you think Tyson was over rated then you dont know fkall about boxing. His style had a use by date, and it was well out of date by the time he faced Holyfield. Holmes asked for what he got. Spinks needed a payday but the KO was a a highlight reel KO. Douglas had Givens in his corner too.....she really did a number on him with her mum included in that circus. He brought excirment back into boxing. Thats history and that is a fact. deal with it homoegood:rofl:yep:hey
A prime Tyson, before he started banging drugs, drink and broads, was a monster, he would have beaten any heavyweight, Ali included! Tyson beat himself
As has already been said, he was a very special fighter. Once in a lifetime speed and power. The best of Mike Tyson would beat the best of most heavyweights from any era. The real problem is that for whatever reason, natural burn out, outside distractions, whatever, is that his peak was so short. For example I believe that the best of Tyson would beat the best of Holyfield or Lewis, but they were able to stay closer to their peak for a longer time period.
If you don't think tyson is special, obviously you haven't taken a look at the heavyweight wasteland that exisits today. In fact, if you look throuighout boxing history, only a couple of times has there been one fighter that was so absolutely dominant for so long against competition that was pretty deep...the 80's might not have been as loaded as the 70's talent-wise...but it was better than pretty much any era before or since and tyson was the dominant figure in the 80's. I rank prime tyson #1 all-time among heavyweights.
Its probably because......YDKSAB perhaps? or maybe you havent watched his fights or followed his career
Lennox Lewis knocks over the same cans and you've made him into a legend? Bruno, Tucker, Ruddock (x2), Golota, Botha were cans
Well, he was better than George Foreman for a start Tyson actually made a career out of knocking out DURABLE fighters (most who'd never been stopped before, Foreman made one out of beating chinny guys....Norton, Moorer, Frazier Guess how long Foremans era lasted for? yep 3 fights and one of those legendary title defences was in Japan against Joe 'Gypsy King' Roman Foreman was THE biggest ducker of the 90's. Why did he face Moorer (chinny and former lhw), Morrison (chinny), Holyfield (former CW who up until that point, hadnt been tested), Qawi (former lhw), Cooney (a crackhead) Lets look at the names missing from Foremans resume....Tucker, Bruno, Ruddock, Mercer, Holmes (who BEGGED Foreman for a fight), Lewis, Bowe, Mcall.......am i seeing a pattern there?
A fighters true greatness is measured by what his peers say Holyfield constantly states (then and now) that him and Tyson were the best 2 heavyweights of the era and he knew he had to beat Tyson to be seen as the best heavyweight. Lennox Lewis ' I had to beat Mike Tyson to cement my legacy' Who are the most called out fighters today? Floyd, Pacqiauo and Wlad, why, because they are the best
u must have been born after his title reign....which means you dont know shi.t if you have to ask a stupid question like this :-(
