if calzaghe only slaps like some of the bad losers on here say, why didn't hopkins just walk him down and ko him? same goes for kessler, lacy etc
Of course he's only a slapper. Byron Mitchell got caught by a punch landed by the referee, Mikkel Kessler took a bad breath therefore he stunned himself and it was really Winky Wright who gave Jeff Lacy a free face-lift during sparring, only the signs were beginning to show on the fight. Seriously... Joe Calzaghe slapped the face of the disbelievers in the Lacy fight and they are still punch-drunk.
Because Calzaghe's punches were genuinely hurting Hopkins the black boy. Look at how many times Hopkins flinched and lunged in with his grapple hooks all over Calzaghe. There was a reason for that. He didn't like the taste of leather.
I hope you are not implying joe is a power puncher because he is FAR from that. He barely gets KO victories let alone one-punch KO victoriesa and those are due to some dodgy referree stoppages in his hometown. His boxing ability however, makes him a ATG.
1) Hopkins doesn't "walk down" any opponent at this point. 2) He's 43. 3) Hopkins is a counterpuncher by nature. Listen, I'm no huge Hopkins fan, and I've always liked Calzaghe, but he does slap. Calzaghe showed 0 power against Hopkins. The one thing that was made obvious by that fight was that Joe does not have the power many of his fans thought. He did not shake, stagger, or even come close to hurting hopkins. And honestly, if you watch JC from an unbiased approached, more of his punches are arm punches. Look at his punches versus Hopkins'. Calzaghe may have won against a 43 year old Hopkins. He would not have beaten a 35 year old Hopkins. He also would have NEVER beaten a near prime RJJ or James Toney. There goes Calzaghe being the best at 168, at least in my eyes.
kessler would murder that little *** boy in your avatar so keep talking **** you nuthugger. You always got have some **** to talk unless its about your little homo lover there. get outta here with that **** man.
You will usually get 'Hopkins would have beaten him 5 years back' and 'Calzaghe slaps'..........Well 5 years back he had good hands, and could punch with full power because they were not brittle and Hopkins was still 38.....and old....he had his ass spanked by a boxer who can only ever throw punches at 50% because of fear of injury.
That's right. But his power is underrated. Hopkins never gave him a clear target and even Jones couldn't stun Bernard, so that does not mean anything. Joe wears you down, he's got decent power but not really a KO artist. No one said that. But those who tasted his "slaps" like Mitchell are saying it different than the intelligent fight fans.
uhhh i have to really disaggrree with you on point 3 there buddy. As a matter of fact go watch some early hopkins fights, he would completely steam roll his oppnents down. Go watch hopkins v glenn johnson on you tube if you dont believe me.
Hopkins hasn't walked anyone down in years .... you would proabably have to go back 12 yrs to find the last time Hopkins walked someone down. Walking a fighter down isn't a part of Hopkins game ...
I've seen all of those fights....Hopkins hasn't stalked someone down since arguably Trinidad. As he's aged, he's become a counterpuncher. Similar to James Toney, who started out as more aggressive, both have become counterpunching artists. I agree that maybe the words "by nature" were wrong, but certainly it's not in Hopkins' nature AT THIS POINT to stalk down Calzaghe.
For jones your basing it on a limited career at 168 jones is not on the same level as calzaghe for acheivements at 168. The best boxer to box at 168, no thats a different matter. As for a prime vs prime hops versus calzaghe, if a prime hops is more active a prime joe finds him many many more times. Hopkins fought to his gameplan and everything went right for him on the night. Joe still won even though he was knocked down early, he had to chase and combat b-hops spoiling. Remember calzaghe is a better counter puncher too. It makes the win more impressive in my book.
