Funnily enough... you know how I drew the comparison with Crawford being a diamond in the rough, set for his leap up into the big time before anybody outside his non-boxing hotbed area knew of him?


Well, it turns out, in February 2013 - before the general public knew who either of them were, Davis called out Crawford and they actually entered into negotiations. Davis, a free agent with no promoter, just wanted to get in the ring with Crawford and didn't ask for any concessions or anything. Crawford - who probably had plenty of mutual awareness of Davis, with both having been stars on the USA domestic scene in the same time period just a division apart; Crawford at 60kg and Davis at 57kg, likely competing in some of the same tournaments or crossing paths and watching each other in action somewhere along the line - pulled out. Kind of a blatant duck - unless Crawford already knew he would be getting his initial break and stepping in the ring with Breidis Prescott several weeks later, and just didn't feel like extending the courtesy of giving Davis a perfectly understandable reason ("hey, something very high reward for probably lower risk than you came up - sorry") for abruptly losing his number. :think

 

Farenas has been doing his main sparring with Roger "Speedy" Gonzalez.

Speedy is a solid pro - or was, anyway, having not fought in two years now. He is tough as nails, forget his three stoppage losses - one to prime Jhonny Gonzalez, and the others coming very late in battles with Cornelius Lock (who Speedy bloodied and mangled) and Yuriorkis Gamboa (who Speedy actually knocked down).

My last couple of times seeing him were on Solo Boxeo, getting robbed against Ronny Rios and then getting a gift over Andrew Cancio.

I'm guessing Roger has become a sparring partner by trade, since he fell off the pro map after the Cancio upset. He is, like I said, a solid fighter who probably is useful in the gym with his toughness and work ethic - but I don't see how prepping for someone like Davis makes any sense with someone of Gonzalez's fairly typical "Mexican" style. Aside from height, Gonzalez and Davis have nothing in common. :? Strange choice.
