    Let's say May of 2009. (With Joe not retiring, but choosing to have one last fight to unify the WBC + Lineal)

    A fading Calzaghe fighting out of his natural and career weight class... But fresh off dominating performances over Hopkins (117-110 :hat) and Roy Jones.

    Dawson is on the way up, coming of career best wins Tarver and Johnson, exceptionally talented and growing in confidence with every fight.

    If Dawson had a bigger following back then, this fight most likely would have happened.

    How would this one go?

    Would have been a good fight I am sure.

    I wish Calzaghe had a victory over a big, skilled, world class southpaw, something I could use as a measuring stick... It is a bit of an unknown, for me anyway.

    Dawson is like Lara to me, he can beat anyone in the world when on his A game because he is more of a style fighter than an overall good fighter. But it's hard to go against a guy was retired 46-0. I think you have to lean Calzaghe decision but it wouldn't surprise me to see Dawson squeak one out.

    dawson, good skills offensively, powerful, good stamina.

    joe - good speed, good chin, little power, great stamina, fair offensive skills.

    dawson pounds out joe for 12 rounds, joe cannot outgass him no rely on chad having an injury, and can only absorb punishment for chad and loses on points. this is why joe ran gibberingly terrified into retirement from chad.

    this fight would NEVER have happened no way joe is fighting someone good and prime (Kessler apart) - this is not the way of cowardzaghe. the way of cowardzaghe is to fight old men and weaklings for ever, plus one or two good fighters when they are injured.

    Calzaghe struggled with poor opposition in Robin Reid and most people believed he lost that fight .

    Calzaghe got floored and lost to B hop .

    Dawson badly schools him .

    Interesting thoughts fellas.

    I agree with 'Mind Reader. It is indeed tricky to imagine how this fight would play out due to not only Calzaghe never fighting a big southpaw w/ Dawson's skill set, but Dawson not fighting a southpaw w/ Calzaghe's workrate and ability to keep a fighter like Dawson of his game by backing them up.

    One thing that must be noted is how Dawson positions himself against southpaws (Harding, Stevenson), circling into the power hand with a low right caused the KO loss to Stevenson, along w/ waiting to catch the lead hand that Adonis was feinting but completely ignoring what he was setting Chad up for.

    I've not seen the Harding fight recently but recall Dawson being careless for long periods in that fight, causing him to be tagged with shots he shouldn't be caught with from an awkward southpaw.

    Joe did not want it.

    Dawson even told Joe he'd come to Wales for that fight. It was a chance foe Clazaghe to win a proper belt at the weight.

    Dawson was an excellent boxer back then with a workrate pretty equal to Joe's.
