On paper its close, but the true reality is that JC's IQ is so much higher along with the fact that he is the quicker fighter it becomes a onesided affair after about 7 or 8 rounds.

I'd favour Calzaghe. He was simply a smarter, more complete fighter. Dawson's usual speed advantage would be negated by Calzaghe's fast hands and feet and Calzaghe would out work him and simply raise his game in those crucial moments where Dawson so often lost his way.

Dawson for all his speed and skills was so erratic, he had the talent but was always missing something to take him to the next level to be truly great. One fight he looks great next he looks awful. He had talent but not the desire, motivation and smarts to beat someone like Calzaghe.

In Joe's case, the Ring title was the man of the weight class, though not technically lineal.

Although, I believe most people even call it lineal at this point.

I value Joe's claim to the LHW division. He was the man in my eyes after beating Hopkins..

No way Dawson gets so much as "a little hurt," let alone a stoppage.

 

Calzaghe takes away the length of Dawson by staying close and pushing him back for a clear decision. no KO is happening here. also, the pressure of Joe, alongside the mental strength, would have Dawson unravel a bit around the mid rounds. we know he's not mentally strong, but Joe is. there is no way Dawson can keep up with Joe. Dawson would look pretty sorry for himself at times.

Dawson has a few moments here and there, but Joe takes it in a wide points win.

if this fight happened back then, i can assure you those picking Dawson wouldn't have said so on this forum. they would pick Joe to win whilst ripping Chad off and pointing out all his weaknesses. but they're not in a position to be embarrassed.

Everything in that first paragraph you describe... Hopkins does all those things better than Joe (minus commitment to volume), Hopkins tried against Dawson, and Hopkins failed miserably. Hopkins might have won 3 rounds over Dawson and that is it.

 

He didn't do it better than Joe in their fight. Hopkins faded down the stretch. Calzaghe and Hopkins are different fighters anyway. Hopkins sharp shoots to land a perfect punch when he sees an opening. Calzaghe throws combinations moving in and out to create the opening. Dawson gets outsmarted and outfoxed and freezes from being overwhelmed in a one sided decision.

Calzaghe takes this and easily. What we subsequently found out about Dawson was that he didn't have the stomach for these type of matches. Calzaghe throws lots of punches and overwhelms Dawson. Unlike jean pascal he wouldn't gas and let Dawson into the fight.

I know plenty of you hate Calzaghe and say prime Hopkins, RJJ, Toney would have beaten him and that's cool as that is a perfectly valid statement to make with a logical thought process behind it but bad chad? The guy who was just bad in a **** way? Please. This is a certified schooling.
