He gets huge credit in my book. I thought after that first KD "this fight is over, wide UD, Joe will be hesitant all night and timed by that right hand" he adjusted and was fighting dirty as hell. He beat Bernard at his own game

 

Wasn't pretty, wasn't dominating, wasn't impressive, but all that really matters is the W.

 

Nobody will ever look impressive and nobody will ever dominate Bhops in the ring until he retires :yep . . . and with that having said . . .

To me Calzaghe is the real deal when/if he goes to fight a prime top fighter in hostile territory. The Hopkins fight is not making it happen because it was against a veteran. A RJJ will not do it either for the same reason.

 

Joe is a great fighter. He is a very clever one. People tend not to understand that speed, strenth, stamina don't win fights. You 've got to be smart to win.

Hopkins looked the better fighter because his work wasn't getting spoiled. There was no work from Hopkins.

Joe Calzaghe won the fight because he wanted it more. A lot of his punches missed the target, but I saw him land more than Hopkins did, and the facts suggest I was correct in thinking so. I expected an untidy and unimpressive victory for Joe Calzaghe right from the beginning. Who in recent history has ever looked impressive against Hopkins? Many people felt Jermain Taylor lossed both of his fights against an old hopkins, and we saw what happened to both Tarver and Winky Wright. Boxing fans are generally fickle, with most of them being incapable of putting things in perspective. Joe Calzaghe has just defeated a 10 year reiging middleweight champion who, despite his age, is coming off impressive victories against elite fighters. It was scrappy, ugly, and in a lot of ways unconvincing, but he did win the fight and in America.

So, let's review. Before Lacy fight we had Calzaghe down as a fighter who ducked all major challenges. Prior to the fight, most people would admit that they thought Lacy would blow Joe out with ease. The fight ended in a lopsided decision for Calzaghe, who in the right words, demolished the younger challenger. Unfortunately but predictably, Joe was accused of beating a hype job. The only fight that was out there for him was undefeated Mikkel Kessler for a chance to unify the decision. He handily defeated the daine, and still a lot of his critics refused to give the man any credit. Joe had now defeated two opponents who were picked to beat him.

However, despite all of his pro ramblings for Joe, there were still valid points made about Joe's reluctancy to fight outside of Europe. I favor the notion that to be a great fighter, you must really fight in the Boxing capital, America. That's where all the juice is, and where all of the best fighters in the world study their craft. Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto, and Manuel Marquez have been fighting in the states for years now, and for Joe to mentioned in the same breathe as those guys, it's not unreasonable to want him to follow in their footsteps. That he did, and went over to Las Vegas to defeat and outwork Bernard Hopkins, an ATG and future Hall of Famer. However, as expected, he was old and shot and some people are even claiming Hopkins won the fight. Unbelievable. People say you cannot win a fight with uneffective aggression? You can when your opponent isn't throwing anything back, and that was the case unfortunately.

The facts are clear. Joe Calzaghe is one of the top three p4p fighters in the the minute and has achieved a lot in the past few years in the sport. He has unified his division after reigning as champion for over 10 years. He finally crossed the sea to defeat a Hall of famer in a bout that I felt he won fairly convincingly and now the only thing missing from his career is fighting a future HOF fighter in his prime. I ask Joe not to fight Roy Jones, but rather Kelly Pavlik. If he defeats the man at middleweight, surely nobody involved in Boxing can deny him.
