Will Canelo Alvarez be like Fernando Vargas? Peak early, decline early?

I know most of you just started watching boxing last year, but for those of us who remember Fernando Vargas was a MUCH better fighter in his early 20s then late 20s. Canelo Alvarez will be the same way, one he has to move to 160 and defiantly 168 he will be no good

Depends if he runs into someone like Trinidad early in his career.

He has peaked very young having been in several long, close fights against top boxers... I see his size and fighting style as not being conducive to a smooth move up to Middleweight. I could be wrong and I like Alvarez so I hope I am.

I'm expecting him to shock many people at Middleweight. He's making a slow move up there, already had two Catchweight fights, which is a good calculated move from his team.

I dont think he has the same problems outside the ring that Vargas had.

He seems like e pretty dedicated guy.

there's an obvious comparison here for sure, and it's crossed my mind more than once :good
vargas was definitely fed to tito and Oscar a bit too early (even though he gave them terrific scraps), but with canelo's popularity and windfall from the Floyd fight, I don't think canelo will fall into the same trap

That fight with tito was a bad idea and I'm sure did irreversible damage, remember when he clutched his head after getting tagged in the first round? Credit to him for recovering and making a fight of it, but that ended in a brutal beating. Then two years later oscar knocked him across the ring. That destroyed him because he hated Oscar and talked so much **** about him. By the time he was 25 he had been beaten badly twice. I don't see anyone in boxing aside from ggg being able to put canelo through a beating like that. As long as he avoids that he should be fine.

what was the deal with vargas hating Oscar so much?
wasn't it something like they were both training at the same camp, vargas fell, put his hand out for Oscar to help him up, and Oscar laughed and kept running...
that's the only one I've heard...

I've actually never heard that although I do find it hilarious lol. From what I recall Fernando felt Oscar wasn't a real Mexican because he was a sellout. Even before the fight was announced Vargas said alot of disrespectful things about Oscar. It seemed like he was jaded towards oscar which gives credence to what you mentioned about him not helping him up.

It's possible. Alvarez has been a pro since he was 15. He's listed as having 40 something fights, but he says he's had a lot more. So with all that time in the ring, and all of those fights, he may have hit his peak. You never know though. Pacquiao was like 16 when he turned pro. It looked like he may have actually been on the decline at age 30 and with over 50 fights. He had a second wind though. He moved up a couple of weight classes and looked as fast and powerful as ever.

Given Canelo's age, the number of fights he has had up to this point, as well as the quality of opponents, He will be totally burnt out by 30. Then again he will also be filthy rich by then (if he isn't already) so he may not feel any need to fight past 30.

seems a comical reason to hate on someone, but I guess when Oscar 'golden tonsils' started raking in the cash and muscled in on vargas' 100 proof Mexican action, I guess it burnt a little deeper ;)

Bingo. That is the main part of it.

The other is, well, Feroz never seemed like he had his head screwed on all that tightly. He was kind of a hot mess waiting to happen; Tito was just the catalyst.

Canelo has remained focused and steady during his rise up and seems a really disciplined kid.

Tito had Illegal Loaded Gloves when he fought Vargas.

Tito also intentionally fouled Vargas with a low blow in the 3rd and 4th rounds just after Vargas had knocked down Tito.

Tito cheated his way against Vargas and many others.

I doubt Canelo will run into another cheater like Tito that Illegally Loads his gloves and Intentionally fouls with low blows.
