Wasn't that his first fight or two with Magomed? It usually takes a guy a minute to get to know his fighter, and there was also a language barrier no?
If I remember correctly, his cheek was swollen up pretty badly early on which suggested a broken cheek or orbital bone. Also, the fight was not competitive at all. Dude just kept eating flush punches to the face. Jackson couldn't have known that it would turn out this bad, but in retrospect he should have thrown in the towel after it became apparent that his guy was injured and really stood no chance of winning.
John David Jackson was good boxer in the 1990's. A prime Jackson would probably school Kelly Pavlik, Jean Pascal, and Tavoris Cloud 97 times out of 100.
