    Simple answer:

Get the boxer in the correct stance (with correct foot placement) and learn him to throw the hook.

    Answer this for me:

How can you expect a boxer to learn proper footwork if he has no understanding of the end goal (i.e. in this case - punching correctly)?

How does he fine tune his movement and positioning when he does not understand the position he needs to be to throw a punch correctly?

By being trained properly. You don't hand car keys to a 16 year old and expect them to know how to be a NASCAR or Formula One driver...it takes practice, training, learning the basic fundamentals.

When I get to the hand positioning with my boxers, I show in a slow motion, step by step on where their hands, head, shoulder, legs, feet should be. Then they must demonstrate the proper technique both in slow motion and full speed so other trainers, as well as myself, can critique them, give them pointers /advice on what they are doing correctly and what areas they need to correct.

For the record. I don't disagree with the idea of teaching footwork before punching technique. I just don't think it matters either way.

In the early stages of training a boxer, we simply introduce each skill in isolation. I don't believe it makes any measurable difference to a boxers progression if footwork is introduced before punching technique or vice versa.

The issue I have with your post is that you appear to dismiss a particular gym because the trainer decided to teach punching technique before footwork. This says nothing about the quality of the gym and/or trainer.

With all due respect, you must be from England. I know alot of England boxing trainers that practice the punch technique before footwork theory. I have nothing against it, I just think its wrong on many levels.

To each their own I suppose. So are you a trainer or boxer...???

    Fair enough mate.

Yes, I'm from England. I'm an amateur coach but we do have a couple of professionals who I help train. I boxed as an amateur in my teens (still train / spar).

Where do you train out of? Who are you training? PM me if you prefer.

    Rich.
