First of all, congratulations Kell. Stylistically i admitted Brook, on paper, should beat Porter, but because of his pulling out of fights and injuries etc made me have my doubts about Kell. This fight with Porter, to me, said we will find out if Brook has what it takes to get to the top. Beating Porter, to me, showed Kell has a whole lot more to offer (moreso than Khan). He showed a great jab, decent right hand, good skills. However, i do feel there is some question marks against Kells stamina, he seemed gassed both in this fight and the first Jones fight. Also, i feel Brook never steps out of first gear, against the right opponent (or wrong one), this could prove costly. One day he could find himself behind on the scorecards wholly because he wasnt doing enough. I think Brook has the skill to beat Pacqiauo (yes, laugh all you want) and i think even Algieri has a good chance of pulling off the upset. But Brook defo has a big future at WW, if he keeps his head screwed on. Your thoughts?
People keep going on about his workrate, but it's about being ready to go the distance if necessary and doing what's needed to win, no more. Did Hopkins get to where he is with 'workrate'?
I didn't think he was gassed at all, looked fresh enough by the end. In fact, given the nature of the fight, having to expend a lot of energy clinching, wrestling with Porter etc, I think he showed world class stamina levels. He's said he did the weight wrong for Jones and was gassed after 6 rounds. He's clearly doing things the right way now. I had concerns about his mentality before this fight but not any longer. He was calm and focused the whole way through and displayed a very high ring IQ, doing a lot of very good, subtle defensive work on the inside and showing great reflexes to avoid almost everything from Porter on the outside. His face after was unmarked apart from the headbutt cut. His timing is exceptional, his footwork very very good. He's also possibly the biggest WW out there at the moment. I watched the fight a few times now and the more I do I see a more and more complete performance. It was a schooling in a lot of ways. He has a lot of things going for him and I can see him beating most of the top welters around barring Pac and May.
not another at least your opinion of his mentality as change and rightly so where does this questioning of his mental ability come from the first Jones fight , he froze momentarily. if that's the case you would have to question a sh it load of fighters smh
I never questioned his mental ability, i said there might be some questions about his stamina, at least it seemed it to me
He's good, a real contender at 147. This fight showed he could handle the step up in class, could handle the big occasion, can avoid getting bullied on the inside, is reasonably durable and can last the distance at this higher level. He still needs to gain more high level experience against high level fighters of different styles and he could do with improving his work-rate and ability to throw punches on the inside.
The exciting thing for me is Brook looked like he had more gears to go through and as champion now I think he will have the confidence to showcase his ability at the top level now.
This was a major hurdle, been a first world title fight in the fighters backyard, been a major underdog against the apparent "beast" and also fighting in a style completely foreign to him, he handled it sublimely. I think he has earned some breathing space and will only get better from here, especially when matched with someone who he can box. He is a beast of a welterweight and answered so many questions about heart, stamina, and mentality and I'm really looking forward to seeing him in big fights. Also, there are so many mouth watering match ups to choose from.
