Is James Toney an ATG?

A ATG by my defintion is someone you regularly turned in top performances against solid opposition. Toney doesn't fit my definition, his lack of consistency really hurts his legacy imo

 

Completely agree, not an all time great. Look at the modern all time greats, they had runs of 5 years or more without being touched. Jones Jr., Floyd, Pernell, Hopkins, Sugar Ray, Hearns, Duran, Hagler, Chavez Sr., Sanchez. Toney isn't at those guys level in terms of discipline. Skill wise he stacks up but didn't love box enough (GGGvoice)

He really did let that Jones loss completely derail his career. Post 95 he wasted a lot of prime years with the exception of 02-03

 

Should've easily been an atg but be didn't put half the effort in he needed to.

His skills were atg levels and his chin but he was out of shape more than he was in share.
After 68 he went downhill and fast

 

A borderline ATG IMO, a bit too inconsistent, but on his night was up there with the best

 

Yes. Toney is the type of fighter theta coil have competed at any era at his best that's what the true measure of an all time great..

He has HoF credentials, ATG not so sure. ATG to me is at least top 3 in a fighters optimal division throughout history which factors in the quality of opposition in his era. Too many boxers are labeled ATG today.

 

Top level skills however far too inconsistent and with a record which is far too messy to be ATG.

Oh and a drugs cheat so should be discounted anyways.

 

No he was busted for PED's twice clearly not one of those borderline cases like RJJ he is a cheater end of. His drug use throws his entire career into question no he doesn't belong as an ATG.

 

ATG skills but he popped for PEDs. I cannot look past it puts a shadow over his whole career. You cannot be sure when he started juicing or if he did on and off.

 

What if he fought Calzaghe?

 

No he never really beat anybody great lost to to many average fighters or barely beat alot of average fighters. His style in the ring was very vintage & straight out of 50's & 60's like a modern day ezzard charles or even ray robinson which would give you the indication that he is a atg. He is a underachiever but he did achieve alot.

 

not a prayer, was smashed around by the likes of dave tiberi in his prime and is a PED cheating disgrace.
