I'm pretty sure Puerto Rico alone completely kills peoples idiotic "everyone is on it" point of view. No Puerto Rican boxer has ever been caught using PED's in boxing and it's obviously not due to a short history for them or number of participants. If the area you're competing in is using you're probably gonna need to use also in order to compete, that's why you have places like PR where no has ever been caught using and you have other places where many have been caught. Cheating is a cultural thing that can be stopped with solid procedures put into place but, mostly, changing how people think. If they do not believe their opponent is cheating they are less likely to cheat themselves. Of course you always have the 1 in 100 guy who is who is thinking, great, my opponent is not cheating, so if I do he will be easy to beat. It's those very few who are the main one's we need to worry about because he can change the entire culture if no one cares to catch him.
Yeah, I don't get it either. Who cares what these guys put in their bodies? That's their own damn business. It's not like any pill or shot is gonna make a tomato can an ATG, which is what some of these numbnuts seem to think! atsch
There should be real strict testing on any boxer who holds a licence. If we can't do that then f*ck it, even the playing field and allow everyone to roid. Can't beat them? Join them right?
Floyd got proof on Pac too? Right....Pac didn't take the "Floyd-Test" :rofl "it's the hypocrisy of Floyd's fans that's funny" - Doug Fischer (RING TV) :hey
do steroids work? yes. do i think Tyson was one of the first big name boxers to discover it during his heyday? yes! problem in fighting is you don't just bolster your stats, you increase your punching power and this is a very dangerous sport. Do fighters take them...some sure. All sports. But all they can do is give strict regulation to minimize usage
PED use has been around for 100 years. Synthetic testosterone for about 75 years. A brief look at the history of sport tells us that PED use has been documented all the way back to the early 1900's. The largest documented controversies come from the East Germans and former Soviet Union, who both had systematic, state controlled doping programs as part of their sporting culture. A quick look at the list of athletes under sanction for doping tells us that it is a worldwide epidemic....as virtually every country participating in sport on the international level has suspended athletes. This idea that it is an American issue is soundly debunked by the actual history of PED use in sport and the documented suspensions. The idea that it is a "black athlete" problem is ridiculous, among other things it could be described as. Yes, PEDs are part of sporting culture at all levels. It is even more so at the highest level where money is involved. It really should be weeded out of combat sports....where fighters are putting their well being on the line every time they compete....but the reality is that the testing is a joke, the culture is firmly entrenched, the money too great, the influence of that money able to manipulate.....it will be difficult to eliminate, and even with tighter restrictions and penalties, there will be athletes who continue to use.
Excellent post. I don't like how widespread PED use is, but I accept that it's there. It's going to take more than extra testing (which still has loopholes) to eliminate it. The biggest problem is how to address the first-mover advantage PED chemists enjoy. Before a test can even be employed, it has to be developed. Before it can be developed, you have to know what you're testing for. Oh, and you have to hope that what you're testing for has a long enough testing window so that you can actually catch the participants that use it. HGH has been known about for decades, and the testing window is still ridiculously short. That's why it's extremely rare to unheard of that someone tests positive for it. Finally, it has to be inexpensive enough to be able to implement on a widespread basis (since testing doesn't pay for itself). One lab that can do the test for thousands of dollars on one designer PED isn't going to work in diminishing use. That's what those who truly want to clean up sports and not just talk a big game for the fans are up against. For boxing in particular, it's a joke that fighters are allowed to keep titles and the results as a W if they're found to be on PED's after the fact. An absolute joke. There needs to be more serious repercussions in place, starting with changing a "no contest" or a win to a loss on the fighter's official record.
These are some strong words for someone who doesn't even understand the purpose of testing. Testing is not about protecting users from themselves as you seem to think. It's about protecting the person who doesn't want to put harmful drugs into their body, yet, want to compete. In other words, it's about enabling people to compete cleanly.
