Hi guys I am new to the forums.

I am a recreational boxer who studies and trains in the sweet arts for fun.
Not competition or anything of that nature... yet.

    I have a slight dilemma.

Just recently I got to spar with a few amateur boxers with varying degree's of pressure placed upon me from each individual.

This one awesome amateur boxer sparred 3 rounds with me at HIGH intensity and hard punches at me to show me "what it's like in an actual fight".

He showed me right then and there that I have LOTS of room for improvement.

One thing I remember him stating was that I never capitalized on the situation whenever I stunned him.

I remember there were moments during his crazy barrage of hurting punches; where I actually connected with a strong solid counter 1-2, a decent left hook and even an uppercut in close range.

When I did the 1-2 he stumbled back into the ropes and, I being tired and frustrated just backed up away from him to recover my senses.

^ He shakes his head, looks at me and yells "wtf are you doing?!?!?! carry on and punch me again! don't just stand there!!! keep your hands up wtf?! Rounds not over yet!!!"

And then he regained himself and rushed me lol with his own over hand right.
Usually when I connect solid with guys in the ring, they remain stunned and I have time to breath. Not with this guy. He was used to getting rocked or something.

And that time when I was in close range, I landed my uppercut. I sent him off the floor and his eyes seemed dazed towards the ceiling.

^ Again I just stood there. I did not carry on with more punches.

Why did I freeze after connecting with solid punches???

Can you train yourself to "capitalize" on the situation when your opponent is stunned??

Or is this something that has to be ingrained in your personality and psych?

What I am asking is can you develop the "eye of the tiger" instincts
or is it just something you are born with???

    Thanks!!

You're screwed. Take up stamp collecting....:)

OK no seriously, what do you think?
I'm not trying to be an a$$, I just think you already know what the answer is.

This is boxing kid.....ain't nobody gonna hold your hand and treat you with kid gloves.
If you're gonna ask questions like this...then you're off to a bad start.

If were to re-phrase the question in a way that asks - how can you "improve" - then there's potential to improve.

But asking strangers on an internet forum about something only you can control....well, that speaks volumes.

Hi Speechless. I apologize if I offended you.

I did not know it is bad etiquette to ask a question the way I did over the net. Forgive me please.

I asked because I figured this is the boxing training/amateur section of the forums, and am just hoping for some advice to improve on my technique and skills in boxing.

If you can please help me then..

How can I improve on not just standing there after stunning a person in the boxing ring??

^ Just wanted to know if this is possible to develop and hone.

Thanks!! and please I hope I did not anger you :?

you answered your own question, you need a breath? so work on your condition.

capitalize? this is a bull**** question for ego raising.. what you want us to answer how to finish your opponent? throw ****ing punches...you understand now how silly your question is?

Hi and good day Captain Hook.

I feel that my message is being misinterpreted as "ego raising" based on the wordings that I have used.

I did not mean to come off as an egotistical person. I am very quite and soft spoken in real life.

I am not good in expressing myself through communication and this is a skill I need to work on and improve in life.

I did not join these forums to cause animosity or hate.

I just wanted to join the awesome boxing community and learn to improve in the discipline and art of boxing.

I am sorry if I offended you guys. Peace.

    Not officially lol...

I have clinched and tied up guys in boxing when I get tired though...... headlocks mostly.

But no official grappling/wrestling background from me.

Though I would love to one day cross train in a grappling discipline though. Would be good to experience.

Tell your trainer or somebody else about the issue, Have them watch you spar and jump your ass every time they catch you doing it, also keep it in the back of your mind during sparring, every time you catch yourself doing it, go in and try to "finish him" the reaction might to too late, but you'll get quicker and quicker till it becomes a natural reaction. Maybe tweak your style a bit as well and try to continually apply pressure, if it's too hard you'll need some conditioning. This will be a relatively easy fix.

No offense taken :) And I appreciate your willingness to take advice and learn. I feel it just comes with practice.

I think there are 3 common scenarios where less experienced boxers are unable to capitalize on opportunities.

    1) they are new to boxing and the concept of intentionally hurting people and swarming in when they are hurt feels 'unnatural'. This is fairly common and is easily overcome through time and with practice.

    2) they have poor cardio - and therefore when they see an opening, choose to take a 'breather' - rather than attack.

    3) they are afraid of getting hit and therefore choose to escape - rather than attack.

It could be any combination of these 3.

Well first improve your conditioning you cannot hurt someone if you are tired.
Now i think that you dont have an agressive kind of additude thats why you are not capitalasing on anything. Now the problem can be in your opponent maybe he is just too good for you you said that he is an awesome boxer. If he is much better then you then you probably dont have confidence when fighting him and then you are thinking that no matter what you do he is going to punish you.so it is best to spar people your own level
so you can build up your confidence.
Now another thing that chould help you is when you think your opponent is hurt dont
wait for perfect oportunity to punch dont wait for an opening just go at him and throw your combos.you said that at one time he wasnt even watching at you if he doesnt see you he cannot punch you , if you didnt took that chance then you must have only wanted to round to end so you chould say that you surrvived :p
sorry if my spelling is bad :)

I have similar experiences and tbh I think I'm too polite when sparring similar to what Speechless says I'm not aggressive by nature and not used to the idea of or want to intentionally hurt someone even tho I know it kinda goes with the sport so even when I'm having a hard time getting pumped when I throw back to counter and if I find them going into defeneive shell or against the ropes I pull back and step out after 1 punch gets through or I land a few on their gloves. As im pretty new to sparring in the back of my mind I know I don't want to be one of those new guys going all out and throwing haymakers like a dick. Especially with guys i know and train with. Am hoping to get a feel for appropriate intensity as I get more experience. Unfort the only time I do happily let go is when I've been popped a few then something clicks in my head to try and give something back. Then again was speaking to a guy at the gym who's had a few amateur bouts a decent bloke and he even said he finds it actually harder to finish off guys when he doesn't know em and has no gripe with em, whereas other guys seem to be able to put their game face on like a switch you can see it in their expressions when u r sparring them....I gotta learn to be a bit like this I reckon hopefully comes with more experience

Hey good luck with boxing man and don't get too offended by the comments you may get. This is a online forum and people feel free to be assholes whenever they want to.

I always had a problem with this myself and it translated to other sports as well. In my case, I think I had self defeating traits or self sabotage. Take Meazy E's advice on telling your partner or trainer to remind you to jump on your opponent.
Also it's good you recognized the problem now. Next time it happens, recognize what your doing and correct it.

So you're sparring, you land a big right hand and ease up a little subconsciously. Recognize what you're doing and correct it right away. I think it goes by recognize, regroup and refocus
