We are well aware that SRR's resume is far greater than Roy's... What is your point? His point is that Clinton Woods was a pretty good fighter, to hell with the belts. Although, when you say it is "pretty easy" to win a major world title what do you mean exactly? Easy as in you could do it?:huh
There is some serious hating on Roy here. Obviously his resume leaves something to be desired given his pedigree but cmon like him or not (and I dont by the way) the guy was a legit talent, and clearly an amazing boxer as well. I highly doubt anyone in this thread that is diminishing Roy to the point of saying his resume is garbage, would be any more impressed if he beat Darius Michelshevski in 1998. They also seem to fail to note that Michelshevski had absolutely no interest in leaving Germany to fight Roy. Fact is, yes there is a lack of world beating monsters on his resume, given how much praise he gets/got but it was also a weak time at light heavy, and there is nothing he could do about that. PS: no other boxer would get quite so much hate for dominating Hopkins, Toney, Hill and McCallum unless his name was Floyd Mayweather but thats a whole other story
As in when there is 4 belts instead of 1 basic math tells me it is MUCH easier to win one especially when you can handpick the worst beltholder like Roy did against Ruiz If there was only one belt Roy would have had to fight Lennox and he would have been KOed by a Jab. Now do you understand what I mean?
ah yes clinton woods, the guy that started boxing at 25 because after years at the pub "his teets were as big as his mums" great fighter
Well, winning trinkets from MW-SMW-LHW and HW then back to LHW is still impressive for this 4 belt era because only Roy has done it.atsch We are well aware he is no Robinson in terms of accomplishments, but he is still one of the greatest fighters of his era, his credentials speak for themselves, no matter how many times you post the same stupid **** over and over, year after year.
Only what I posted wasn't stupid. Jones fought for a lot of vacant belts or belts that were stripped from DM and he got to fight a much easier opponent for them all the while never fighting a savage puncher in his whole career and never being THE champion in any division he fought in. Do you think Roy could have been a 4 weight 'champion' if there was only 1 belt per division? He might have been a 2 division champion at the most but not 4. He wouldn't have risked it anyway in that scenario so it is a moot point. :good
In his era it would be close to impossible for him to become THE HW champ unless he had somehow beat Holyfield.. Beating Lennox or a Klit brother would be damn near impossible due to their size and skill.. Edit: I wouldn't pick Fitzsimmons or Spinks to be THE HW Champion in the era of Lennox Lewis either.. Which is why we have to look at more than the fact of being THE champ, other things need to be taken into consideration. Would I pick HW Roy over 186 lb Jim Corbett? Absolutely.
Simple as that..........the same happened to other us-figthers - hw has never been the same ..........................
roy was class and people discrediting the ruiz win are nuts, thats a maissive accomplishment, you cant really deny that there are some holes in his resume and proabably could have done a bit more
Throw out the steroid timing guesses....he probably never stopped using PEDs before or after the Ruiz fight, so it is a mute point. He jumped from 175 weightclass to 198-199 in a over 30 year old body, with the majority of the weight gain being muscle mass. He then shed all of that weight in a short timeframe to come down to 175 and fight Tarver. The stress that puts on your body is immense, especially when you are past your physical prime. If he was cutting water, glycogen and fat to make 175 again it would have been less taxing; but in his case he needed to cut a great deal of muscle to get from mid-high 190's back down.....as he was lean at every weight. That is more taxing, again especially at an age outside his physical prime. It hurt his gifts, which were amazing speed, reflexes, timing, athleticism, and I think even punch resistance. You don't go through all those weight classes fighting title fights and contenders without being touched no matter who you are, yet his punch resistance vanished, along with declined athletic gifts.......he got old almost overnight.....IMO it's attributed to that weight gain and subsequent cut. He should've never gone back down past cruiser.
have never believed in messing with your weight, as in going up and then down. after he did that problems surfaced.
You haven't heard of the balance problems he was seeking medical help for? That isn't an age related thing when you are only in your 40s.
Continued to fight threats to allow for that bad streak from stardom. KO2 Tarver, then took on Glen Johnson KO9, then Tarver again UD. His fall was expected at his age, wear and tear, and style. Plus, it seems weight leaping and PED's were working against him.
