Yup that's the way I see it too, and yet Hopkins was still willing to take this fight and he'll do his best to try and figure out how to win it.

Hopkins is 50 him even being in the ring is an accomplishment, as far as Mayweather people need to realize he can't do what everyone else does.

A guy like Kovalev will get more credit for beating the #10 LHW than Mayweather will get for beating a top 3 WW/JMW

Just like a guy like Thurman will get more praise for beating unranked WW's than a Maidana or Canelo get for beating actual champs. A some point you have to learn to accept what you can't change.

I think Hopkins gets more credit than either one of them for even getting in the ring with such a dangerous fighter as Kovalev.

There was another thread asking what Floyd had to do the earn our respect. There's the answer. Get in the ring with GGG and let's see if you can outbox him.

Hop gets much respect due to age but what you said is what I mean GGG in his 1st division will get more credit for beating the #10 MW than Mayweather beating the #2/3 WW/JMW in his 4/5th division at some point you have to stop complaining and realize not everyone will agree with you. As a fighter Mayweather been had my respect but I've already accepted the fact that what he does in the ring will be overlook like most greats while active.

Beating the #1/2 fighter in your division is big unless your Floyd just like beating Champs/unifying your division is big unless your Mayweather.

Depends who they are. If they're Baldomir, Gatti etc. He's not getting a ton of respect from me. And if it was respect he was looking for he should have fought Pac 4-5 years ago.

I have way more respect for Hopkins getting in the ring with Kovalev than anything Mayweather's done in his entire career because he's got the balls to risk getting seriously injured and is willing to take that chance, even though he doesn't need the money.

So why is he doing it?

For two reasons, one to give the fans something to get excited about, and two to seriously enhance his legacy if he wins. And if Floyd wants to call himself TBE then he should be doing the same thing.

All Floyd has to do to enhance his legacy is fight Pac, a fight he as a very good chance of winning. Asking him to fight GGG is probably asking a little too much, although I would have said the same thing when Duran stepped into the ring against Barkley, especially considering he'd just come off a KO victory over Hearns, so one never knows.

To each his own if you just look at what they have done in boxing accomplishments, resume, title's won, Maidana, Canelo, Guerrero have all done more than Kovalev but will be considered a lesser opponents simply because they're Mayweather opponents.

The Pacquiao thing is on both fighters imo 09-13 Pac's fault 13-now May's fault my opinion Pac fans will say he doesn't fight for money yet consistently argue turning down a career payday because its not enough sums up how negotiations went.

Comparing him with HOFers of the past he done about the same fought through as many division as guys like SRL/Hearns beating top guys the thing with Duran I can see how people have that opinion the only and biggest difference I see is that Duran would routinely blowup to about 200lbs between fights while Mayweather at most is probably 4/5lbs heavier than his fight night weight

Mostly its the odds on these two match up. We know Floyd is levels above Maidana. Yeah, he's 37 and in decline, but he's still clearly the superior fighter. He's the P4P #1. He doesn't need to be negative and spoil and clinch to beat a guy like Maidana, or at least he shouldn't. Mayweather's supposed to beat Maidana and everyone knows it.

Hopkins is 50 and has been a pro since the late 80's. If he pulls it off and unifies titles at his age, at this stage of his career, it really doesn't matter how he does it. If he clinches 30 times a round and gets away with it, it won't matter, because he's not supposed to be able to do this. You're not supposed to beat a Kovalev and unify titles at 50. That's wrong. It's not supposed to happen in this sport.

I wouldnt say its not supposed to happen, just say "it hasnt been done"

But its still in general on how fighters fight and sometimes hold to your advangte, thats what smart fighters do. so i dont want the same A holes complaing about Mayweather but praise B hop, espcially when B hop is gonna headbutt and throw some low blows him self but ppl want to call Floyd dirty :patsch:patsch

Yes he'll be praised but he will also be criticised by some fans. You can never please everyone and there will always be haters who will pick apart a fighter performance no matter how impressive the achievement.

Hopkins age is also clearly a factor. He's almost 50, Mayweather is 37 which is only a few months older than Hopkins was when he beat Tito, in one of his finest performances. Funny things is everyone expected Hopkins to clinch and maul against Tito, he instead put on a boxing clinic.

    Here's why.
Because Hopkins, at age 50, fighting Kovalev is far more impressive than if Mayweather called out GGG to fight him at GGG's weight limit.
Mayweather has rarely fought someone who stood a chance, he's avoided any and all challenges that could test him, even to the extent of retiring. He is simply unwilling to risk that 0.
Hopkins is willing to risk his own health to show he is boss.
That's why old man Hopkins can fight defensively and get praise, and Mayweather can't, because the latter would find defensively against a 12 year old Shirley temple, because he is simply unwilling to ever test himself, and Hopkins is beyond being tested. He's sought out fights he should be destroyed in, yet even in losses has always been competitive.
