How important is a chin in boxing? Can a boxer with a weak chin make it to the top by having great defense, or is it only a matter of time before he gets KO'd?

pretty important in a sport where by definition you're supposed to get hit in the face. Its not necessary to have a granite chin to get to the top level..but you better have a lot of tools in your arsenal to prevent getting hit clean. Klitschko is a prime example of the above.

It is important, because no matter how good your defense is, you're going to get caught.

Its pretty important, and not just in boxing. It makes up a quarter of ones face, or half of a Lebedev or Kovalev face.

Dam that's as close as I've ever seen you come to a relevant comment but not quite though.... Roger had no chin and was a 3x world champ.... Norton was the HW champ without a great chin (average one )..

Chin - Important attribute yes. Most important attribute, debatable....

As Carl Froch just pointed out why Groves will never be great, A great boxer needs to be a giver & a taker. Grove's Glass Jaw can't take it so he will never be a great.
The same goes for GGG. Once he gets in the ring with an A level giver, his Russian glass jaw will be exposed to the world.

A fighter with great defense can definitely make it far with a weak chin.

After having the cojones to get into the ring/get up off the canvas, a sturdy jaw is probably the most important trait for a boxer.

Toughness can bail you out in a big way.

One of the best examples - when Tex Cobb outlasted Ernie Shavers.

Everybody just can't take a shot ! Doesn't mean you can't fight it means you can't get hit ! That's when defense is key...
