Which MW champion stands the best chance of knocking out Hagler?

Any man can be KO'd by the right punch, but I think Hagler is pretty close to being unstoppable. I wouldn't bet any middleweight that ever lived to stop him. A true iron man.

Side note: I don't think Hearns was the devastating puncher at 160 compared to 147/154, although obviously still a heavy hitter. Duran at 160 shouldn't be used as an example, either.

 

Agreed. Marv had an absolute granite chin and I don't fancy anyone to knock him out. I have that much faith in his chin.

Okay, maybe if he were an old, washed-up fighter someone could do it, but prime Marv? Just can't see it myself.

Nobody who ever stood and traded with Hagler hurt him enough to make him cautious, even Tommy.

The one-punch bombers have an outside chance, of course, Ketchel, Jackson, Graziano, McClellan, Etc, but guys that could box and punch would be the ones to pull it off... .

McCallum comes to mind, as he has the chin and methodical style and patience to place the hard punches where they need to be, perhaps Monzon in the same way.

Stopping Hagler is a tall order, but those two names to me are the most likely for the reason outlined.

 

I'm astonished nobody else has mentioned GGG. He's one of the most frightening punchers the division has ever seen.

I still believe in Hearns like the one with the best chance.

IMO, Tommy (with a smarter gameplan, staying outside, avoiding a brawl) would wear gradually Marvin's defenses, damaging him little by little, and soon or later Tommy would be able to catch him cold with a bomb.

Monzon or Valdez are also decent wild cards when it comes to trying to knock out Marvin.

Watching it on British TV the commentator Reg Gutteridge ( who was not given to bursts of histrionics ) said something like " Oh dear, what on earth is Roldan doing waving his arms around trying to convince the crowd that the pull / slip was a legitimate knockdown? That will just make Hagler angry. "

It did, and the outcome was inevitable.

 

F, people may snicker at your post, saying who has GGG fought of any note ?. But what little I have seen of Golovkin til now has impressed me greatly...His concrete like hands when landed so far has hurt every opponent terribly, so far in his career no doubt, but too bad he is fighting in an age when the best are not FORCED to fight the best ala the 1940s ,
when GGG would have been tested and our questions would have been answered...But my instinct is to feel that we may very well have an alltime
great middleweight in our midst, who would fit in nicely in any era...
