He might beat Frazier, a very dangerous fight for Joe ..

Holmes and Lewis would beat him .. too big and the wrong style ..

Holmes would beat him and Lewis might very well annihilate him.

As far a I'm concerned Sam is a top three ATG...but I think he loses to all three great heavyweights. Frazier would have some very rocky moments, but his pace, aggression would lead to a late round stoppage or decision.
Holmes' jab, reach and footwork enable him to take a UD. A prime Lewis trained by Steward would KO Langford in five rounds...maybe less.

Sam gets whipped in each fight.

    Not fair to Langford.

I'd bet he'd try though, and that says alot.

Yep. However the best part is they are actually serious when they try to convince themselves, and others, the smaller guy wins.

How about a Sam Langford v Marciano thread, just for a change?

Might beat Frazier. It's a possibility.

The other two would beat him handily I reckon. As would Wlad.

This might be hard to get your heads around, but Langford would be a serious threat to all of them.

Put him against any of those guys in a series of three, and he would likely beat them once.

What is your point here? Are you claiming that after each of these guys splattering him twice the ever brave gutsy Langford comes back for more, and these guys are so bored shitless they drop a points decision to him, he deserves the MORAL victory?

    Are you actually sane?

I think at some point size does factor in, especially combined with ability and these matchups would prove it. Frazier, who was considered short in the 70's would be nearly 5 inches taller than Langford. What does that say about Sam's chances against Holmes and Lewis who were both 4 to 5 inches taller than Frazier? From what little film I've seen of Langford and his opponents, HW's of Frazier's, Holmes' and Lewis' ilk just weren't around at the time. Of the 3 proposed opponents this thread offers I guess I would give Sam the best chance against Frazier only due to the not so ridiculous size difference. Against Holmes and Lewis? No chance. Too much size combined with talent.

I would have thought that my point was eminently simple.

I am saying that Sam Langford’s capabilities are such, that if he fought any one of these men three times, he would win one fight out of the three.

It wouldn’t necessarily have to be the third fight of the series, it might end up being the first.

I say this after very careful consideration.

Nah. I mean he has a punchers chance but Holmes is one of the worst stylistic matchups for him and Lewis isn't far behind. He wouldn't get past the jab.

Frazier would be more his speed.

    He would never beat Lewis.

    Frazier might beat Lewis.

No way could Frazier get through a trilogy with Sam without dropping one.

Perhaps you are not seeing the other side of the stylistic match here.

Holmes was not that mobile, and he probably won’t be able to keep Langford away from him. We are going to see some interesting exchanges here.

As for Lewis, Langford might just be one of the worst matches of all time for him. Langford was the single most dangerous heavyweight in history, in terms of setting up a single punch, and exploiting a single opening. He would spend 20 rounds setting up his trap if he had to, and Lewis would have to be wary for every second of every round.

As for Frazier, I think that anybody using a come forward style against Langford is going to be in serious danger.
