Ernie "Indian Red" Lopez, a welterweight contender, was Danny's older brother. Danny was called "Little Red" during his career.

Danny simply didn't match up well with Salvador Sanchez, who had fine boxing skills and could seemingly land right-hand leads to the head of Lopez whenever he felt like it. As a young fighter on the way up, Danny had the same problem in a highly anticipated bout with another young fighter based in the Los Angeles area, Bobby Chacon.

It may be forgotten that Bobby was a very talented fighter with plenty of boxing skill during the early part of his career before becoming more of a brawler later on. Bobby certainly was far more talented and skillful than Danny. Like Sanchez, Bobby was able to land with repeated right leads to the head before stopping Danny in the ninth round.

As it turned out, Danny was a far more dedicated fighter than Bobby when it came to training. Danny also had a very stable home life and a solid managerial situation during his career, unlike Chacon. As a result, Chacon had much more of a roller coaster-type career than Danny.
