If you ask me one of the better match ups that can be made. Joe Louis vs Joe Frazier both in their primes. Who do you got?
Louis would wreck Joe inside of two rounds. It would be worse than the Foreman debacle because Louis was a deadly sharpshooter. No contest, IMO.
I might be inclined to give Joe Frazier the edge. Louis didn't like inside fighters and he most certainly didn't like left hooks. Joe was fast and had ridiculous upper body movement, solid power and plenty of heart and stamina. Not easy to choose but this would be a tough fight for Louis.
Now my eras comparison comes back into play. Each would have been a bit different had their birthdates been reversed.
Louis could quite easily bomb Frazier out as easily as Foreman did, yeah. If Smokin' Joe can weather the early storm, though, the bout would get very interesting
Joe , is not facing a 1 handed guy here fools. You, do not beat joe whilst been blind in 1 eye either! joe, would of slaughtered joe with 2 good eyes just for the record!!
Obviously, it could go Louis' way via sharp counters and combinations, but I favor Frazier; he has a style advantage in the pressure and left hook, as previously noted. Frazier is bringing a package of pressure, left hooks, body work, and head movement Louis never remotely encountered. Louis may land clean shots but I think the pressure and persistence of Frazier does it. Frazier TKO8-10 Louis
Could go either way. Louis was better overall. But Frazier had a style Louis admitted hating, some though he lost the 1st fight with Godoy, & he would not pick himself over Rocky, & Frazier was faster & more accurate. I think a great slugger like Foreman had a style advantage, with enormous strength, pushing away, reach...I would pick Frazier, & Louis in the rematch, as he did great in them. A peak motivated Frazier was a swarmer easily better than any Louis ever faced. And his eye problems did not handicap him, & while he hit much more with the left, he was not a 1 handed fighter. If he had less of a work rate with the left, it would not be seen a 1 handed by anyone, he was just so active with left hooks.
As unlikely as this may sound to many, I have absolutely no trouble envisioning it. Remember, Frazier, for all of his willingness, spirit and grit, was stunned or shook-up by the much lighter hitting Ali, off of flush shots, early in both the rematch and rubber match. Louis was precision, with terrific leverage and timing. His right hand was a show-stopper. Frazier was a slow starter whereas Louis liked to visit the showers early. To me its all about styles.
Louis was an amazing precision puncher...and what he brings is a bad mathc up for Frazier for sure... I'll just say that no one ever fought as hard as Joe Frazier...and if Billy Conn could shake Louis...Frazier could. If Galento could drop Louis...Frazier could. If Godoy could trouble Louis...Frazier could. Joe Frazier was hell on wheels...win or lose. If Frazier drags Louis past 6-7 rounds things could get interesting. As great as Joe Louis is...I would take Joe Frazier. Two ATG's.
Joe Louis precision, technique and punching power would be too much fro Frazier who get stopped at around the sixth round.
