How to be a boxing reporter

Have connections.

My father knew the person who put up the fight at the ''Casino de Montreal'' in canada - Montreal, so he hook me up with her and I got to go to press conferences etc, that's how I started being able to see more popular boxers face to face and ask them questions.

I only do this for local boxers such as David lemieux, lucien bute ( and I don't want to be a full time reporter ) but I guess that's how you start ?

Be a borderline **** who doesn't emit aggression vibes and people will let you hang around

 

Join your nearest professional gym that houses a number of high-level athletes and get friendly with the owner, coaches and fighters. Offer to help them with publicity in exchange to have access to their camp, their contacts etc.

If your objective is to have some fun covering the sport you enjoy whilst getting access to some of the best seats in the arena, then you're doing the right thing.

But if your ambition is to make money from boxing journalism, then you must stop right now - as you won't. The money is not there.

 

I wouldn't bother, there are enough covering this niche sport.

 

You dont know anything about the sport but you love the sport?

Also, there is a thing called "google" that will help you find local boxing gyms. Title boxing is located in Nashville, check them out.
Connections are everything, but like was posted before, do not expect to make money off this sport. I am a graphic designer, and have worked with gyms, promos, and boxers....I do it because I love it, and love the chance to talk to some of the fighters that I get to tune in and watch with friends. Carry low expectations, and any positive that might happen to you within the sport will be an awesome bonus to look forward to.

Know **** about boxing (No1 rule of boxing - Roger knows best)
remain unbiased. You can still be a fan or root for a fighter without bieng blindly biased folks! believe it or not.
Don't talk about Floyd Pacquiao like there is a possibility of it happening
be accurate with your information. Don't provide misinformation - removing context, skewing/changing words.

Become a reporter elsewhere like news and cover boxing on the side. People always seem to think they can just walk into journalism and jobs like becoming a boxing reporter.
Do a degree/college in it, gain valuable work experience at newspapers and magazines, write a blog, go to shows, put your stuff out there on twitter - then you might have a chance if you do all those things.

I wanted to be a sports journalist, hell I've covered a hell of alot of sport, but now I actually prefer being a reporter at a newspaper, but if the chance to cover boxing comes up full-time I'd do it. I live in the UK and I've only seen 2 jobs listed ever since becoming a journalist two years ago.

 

Avoid this forum for any advice.

 

Go to college. Get a degree in journalism. Work your way to a job at a news outlet in a city that has a boxing scene. Chances are no one is covering that beat full-time so it's probably yours for the asking (in addition to whatever else they have you covering).
