id say Tyson tops this list, he was a small guy fighting in a big mans division and he certainly made his mark. Also i believe the size difference between Tyson and his opponents was much bigger than Marciano and his? Or i could be wrong Shane Mosely, Manny Pacqiauo, Antonio Margarito are all WWs with reach equal to or longer than Tyson.
Barbados Joe Walcott is a good shout. He was so abnormally short, that his taller opponents couldnt get a clean shot at him. I will throw Jack Dillon into the mix as well.
Frank Klaus? By way of Jack Dillon? Again, like people said, it's not like they were blessed being born stumpies.
The crouch helped Tyson and Rocky Marciano get their power in their punches, but everyone with no exception has trouble against a bigger man. There is no style that can help against bigger men, and the crouch instead of helping smaller men, favours big guys.
They werent blessed, but they had to work with what they had, and they made an advantage out of a weakness.
Tyson was a master at fighting taller men and was far more skilled in doing it than many give him credit for. Anyone who's boxed taller fighters knows how much skill it takes to get in clean against long legs, long arms and lots of height. Marciano by comparison didn't have the same dazzling abilities as Tyson but sat low and right and was subtle with his pawing jab and sneaky footwork. Duran was superb at it, especially in his fights with ray leonard 1, Davey moore and iran barkley. Chavez and locche were defensive masters who came in low with unbelievable head movement and anticipation. Buddy mcGirt was another. Pernell whittaker was another short fighter who was great with taller opponents, and differed from the above in his approach. Although im not really fans of either, mayweather and broner do very well staying low against usually bigger opponents. I agree with seamus that, to me at least, its easier to punch downwards. When a short fighter is in range so is his opponent, but when a tall fighter is in range his opponent may not be, so a short fighter is always at risk when hes in punching range. So the successful smaller fighter generally has to be more skilled than his taller counterparts to overcome his disadvantages. The skills are often more subtle and they often get overlooked and hidden behind the 'slugger' tag, but to those who know what theyre looking at its a joy to watch.
I think the genius is being able to adapt to your disadvantages and try to emphasize and capitalize in the space that they become an advantage. Charley Goldman did it with Marciano,Stewart did it well with tall men.
Tyson may have been 5"10 and had a 70 inch reach but when he was in condition I dont think he has a problem with size and the bigger men that Marciano fought were actually strong KO wins Rex Layne 6"1 Vingo 6"4 old Joe Louis 6"2 but the best men of his day were in the 6" bracket I dont know much about Rocky Kansas but he must have had a lot of success because he was a champ and was exceptionally short at 5ft
forgot to add tommy burns who to me was ahead of his time in terms of his clever footwork, bringing tall opponents onto him. very effective
