Absolutely pointless fight. Froch is a career SMW he walks around just a bit over thei weight limit in between his fights. Kovalev is a career LHW. He wouldn't be able to make 168. If the fight would take place at 175, Froch would be in a heavy disadvantage right from the start, fighting north of his own natural weight against a guy who is naturally bigger than him and is experienced in rehydrating at this weight (against Hopkins Kovalev hit the IBF 185 pound rehydration limit exactly). They should continue fighting in their respective weight classes imo.
Not even competitive. Froch takes a hiding for as long as it goes. See round 12 of Kov v BHop and you'll get that from the opening bell.
168 simply ain't happening. Kovalev already said (with reference to fighting Ward) that he can't/ won't make 168. Contrary to what some have been saying he's usually not that big a LHW though - AFAIK Saturdays 188lbs was the heaviest he's ever come to the ring by a margin. You wanna see a BIG LHW check out Lepikhin who also fought and won (though depressingly unimpressively) Saturday night. Froch on the other hand, whilst again looking quite big (perhaps because like Kovalev he seems to have quite an upright stance) walks and has always fought just slightly above the SMW limit - typically 173 - 175 - lighter than most of his peers and in fact about the same weight as some of the overblown JMWs (like Canelo). Froch ain't about to move up at 37 years old and on the verge of retirement (and would be stupid to do so unless there was some insane amount of money on the table), though I suspect he could hold his own against the vast majority of LHWs even given the size difference. Not against Kovalev though. Froch's one of my favourite fighters but he gets hit far more than you can afford to against Kovalev. GGG vs Froch I'd fukkin love to see, Froch vs Kovalev not so much, though it'd undeniably be great while it lasted I simply see the size in conjunction with Kovs mobility and power as being too much for Carl.
Sadly, Lucian Bute is gonna earn a workman like UD or TKO over Bolonti and earn a high ranking in the WBA since Bolonti was last seen giving a decent account of himself vs Brahmer. Now, Bute will earn a top 3 WBA ranking, and Brahmer will be forced to fight Kovalev in the late spring or vacate, allowing Bute to pick up the vacant/interim WBA minor title, setting him right into Kovalevs crosshairs. I know this thread is about Froch and Kovalev, but they are a very similar fighter with KOvalev having the edge in power and distance, and Froch having an edge in chin and toughness and NERVES of fukking IRON. I think Froch likely woulda scored the KO vs Bernard, but again, he may also been stopped himself because he loves to get lured into slugfests. If Froch vs Kovalev happened right now....I'd favor Kovalev by KO, even at 68......just too much torque on his shots. And Froch was hurt a few times vs Groves, although Groves is a more powerful version of a Brahmer type in that his boxing skills outweigh his power, but his power is still something to behold.
It wouldn't happen at 168 it would have to be at 175. Kovalev for me inside the distance inside 8 one sided rounds. Kovalev is the much bigger, stronger and harder hitting man. Plus he's the better boxer and more fluid of the two. Frochs only hope would to be to outlast Kovalev and that wouldn't happen. Kovalev in rounds 6-8.
