Mike Tyson was a superstar when boxing was still very big in USA. Today, few save die hard boxing fans know the name of Wladimir Klitschko but the world still know who Tyson were. But was there anything specifik about Mikes run at HW that makes it more remarkable than Wladimirs? Who or which did he beat that was so great, save an ancient Larry Holmes? One take on Mike is that he run a bunch of average boxers out of the game, but lost when he faced the real deal. Wladimir has cruched so many average boxers it's getting old, and after Manny Steward got his hands on him he seemed to overcome the weaknesses that made his lose to the likes of Sanders (had some talent but nothing extraordinary) and Purrity (a poor journeyman). What does ESB think? Maybe I should add that I have Wladimir and Mike very close on my ATG list, but I think that Wladimir would have done better than Mike against many opponents. There are, or should be, some stylistic nightmares for him but generelly he is better head to head thank's to size, athletic ability, boxing skill and spoliling tactics, assuming he is allowed to get away with it. The point with this thread isn't to elevate Wladimir to a demigood while Mike is placed in the gutter, I'm simple interested in ESB opinions.
There is little doubt that Wlad will - and should - be ranked higher at an ATG HW. But there is also little doubt that Tyson will always be the higher profile public figure. Like Ali, on a lesser scale, he transcends boxing. Wlad does not.
Klitschko. Tyson was maybe better at his peak but squandered his potential didn't achieve what he could have. Klitschkos are obviously hard to rate on ATG lists because while they are dominant and clearly good boxers, this heavyweight era is bad compared to past ones and they don't have the resumes of others.
It's a bit how I look at it. Boxers with mythical primes short as the memory of a goldfish makes me sceptical. Wladimir developed and kept delivering knockouts with poetic brutality.
Wlad, obviously, due to his longevity. A prime Tyson may have crushed the glass Wlad's chin carries though. Let's be clear, Wlad has never fought an ATG at his peak. Still, he's been TKOed three times in his career.
Wlad by far. His unbeaten streak started more than 10 years ago. He has barely lost a round since. Tyson, on the other hand, had his golden years between late 1986 and late 1989 (03 years), and that is the base of his fame. Klitschko started his career 18 years ago and he's still destroying contenders. Tyson was already on the decline after a decade.
These polls I don't take into consideration their resumes, because Tyson clearly faced tougher opposition during his boxing years. The people Wald beat, Prime Tyson would knock out imo. When picking ATG's, I tend to think who would beat who in my head and work it out that way. I think Prime Mike would Knock out Wlad, its why he gets my vote.
Throw Prime Mike in with Pulev and Povetkin*Easily Wlad's greatest wins-I'm not adding Haye the farce* He knocks them both out easily.
