There is no excuse for a boxer at the top level being soft and looking like they are carrying body fat. If they are their diet is wrong, simple as that.

IMO bellew was soft at lhw, inspite of looking gaunt, because he was losing muscle as well as fat.

That said, I am sure he is still fit, I just think if he carried more muscle/lost fat he'd be stronger.

Bellew is very pale and very thick-skinned, but he's a natural cruiser.. Clev has had to build himself up to the division, because he was too scared to ever fight Kovalev again or Stevenson or Dawson or Froch or Hopkins.

    exactly spot on

Its boxing not body building - some fighters/people can be superfit but never have that look.

This issue always used to grate me when everyone used to slag off John McDermott for being fat, saying he was unfit, kebab muncher etc when in reality he could do 10-12 rounds with the best of them especially for a heavyweight.

It would be interesting to see how much of it is down to Bellew's genes or his diet. I have a mate who has a similar physique but when it comes to sports can last the distance. I think with Bellew it's probably mainly down to his genes but he could improve things with his diet. He won't be no Frank Bruno when it comes to the physiques department, but surely he can get into better shape.

I'm with the majority here, if you're a professional sportsman then you should make all the effort to be in shape. After all it is your job to be.

    it's funny because it's true.

Its like bellew's body went through some kind of delayed development where his muscular growth didn't ever develop at the same rate as his skeletal growth

I think it was a combination of pale skin, thick skin, lack of muscle tissue and flat affect from starving, that he could be so gaunt without appearing 'shredded'. At cruiser instead of the flat affect from starving its more a case of water retention from not fasting to make weight, as to why he doesn't look more muscular.

Bellew might have poor genetics for muscle growth, but his tendons and ligaments and joints seem naturally strong, and technically he's very sound and well-taught/well-practiced.

Nobody is claiming to beat him, merely commenting on his diet and whether or not he is in tip top shape. Again, he is a professional athlete so should have no excuses to not be in best shape for the majority of the time. It's his job to be in great shape like any other boxer needs to be.

If they look soft it's for no other reason than their training and/or diet is sub optimal.

    Simple as that.

Marathon runners look soft. As long as he can box well and punch hard for 12 rounds at a pace, it doesn't matter what he looks like
