Foreman showed up for this fight in San Juan the day before the fight and didn’t give himself time to get acclimated to the heat. He paced himself, fighting in his newfound measured style and did not throw a significant punch for the first 5 rounds. This was all wrong for him. The Foreman of Zaire would have tracked down Young, forced him to the ropes, went to the body with power and belted him out inside of a few short rounds. The 1973-74 Foreman, the one who cut the ring and really went after his man was the best Foreman. The George who lost to Young never really went after him. The Foreman who fought at a measured pace just was not the real George Foreman.

No way George was at a all time low in confidence.

Of course not. Peak does not mean when you theoretically could have been at both your physical & psychological peak. It means when you were your best, for whatever reason. Young fought very well & wisely, got away with a good amount of manhandling like Ali in Zaire. But peak Foreman would not have fought like this & would have cut off & smoked Young.

No he wasn't and the measured style was a totally mistake by Gil Clancey. Gil wanted to shorten up Foreman's punches but his way, bringing George's feet closer together and shortening his gate totally messed up what was natural for Big George. The first time we saw this "style" was against Dino Dennis and Foreman's uppercut was traveling sideways, his jab had no body weight behind it/short footsteps, and his straight right hand had a loop to it, it was a total mess. Against Young he stood straight up and without an offense until the off balanced assault that came close to putting Jimmy away. Another trainer who understood what George needed would have had Foreman come out on top in that bout.

    Physically peak, yes.

If Foreman had mental issues that was on him. 90% of the game is half mental.

Jimmy Young was the best negative fighter ever...he always fought at the level of his opposition. He's have beaten any version of Foreman...all those big, heavy sluggers were his meat, including George Foreman. The only heavyweights who would have a chance of beating Jimmy Young would have been Frazier and Marciano.....constantly pouring it on, high volume type fighters.

Funny how the same folks who make up all kinds of excuses for Foreman, like not turning up in time to acclimatise to the heat in San Juan, being dehydrated, etc etc dismiss out of hand Lewis not bothering to turn up in South Africa in time to get used to the climate for the Rahman fight.

    Usual ESB hypocrisy.

Identical quote from Cox's corner real cool bio of Foreman the greatest slugger, worth a read. Peak Foreman is Ali fight probably.
Let't not forget Young had a chin. 40-0 Foreman KOs him imo.
