Sadly, one of the more memorable visuals from UFC 83 last Saturday night was Kalib Starnes practically running away from Nate Quarry during their fight. Many questioned Starnes' heart heading into the fight and he certainly did make a statement. The "running man" was on the radio this morning to explain what happened. Thanks to reader dudeski for sending in this recap" Just heard Starnes on the radio station from Montreal. Basically he sets the record straight and backs it up with proof. As many of you know this was his last fight of the UFC contract and he has always voiced his dissatisfaction with his salary. Basically after the Kendall Grove fight where his rib was broken, UFC did NOT cover any medical bills even though it happened on the "work site". He said that he is one of the many fighters who get injured and never compensated by the UFC. He was well aware that he was on the main card because it was Canada, and this being his last fight he decided to protest in the names of all underpaid fighters and screw over the UFC. This is NO joke because he claimed that the only reason Dana White officially released the fight bonuses was in order to counter-act the public statement that Starnes is about to make or would have made. However, since the 75k fight bonuses were disclosed Kalib's martyr actions may not be as significant. Nevertheless, expect an official statement later this week as his gym is holding a official press conference on Wednesday. We all know that the "real" Kalib Starnes would have never fought the way he did and luckily there IS an explanation.

Not true, Kalib and the radio station have said he was never on and he posted his own reason on his website.

Yea, he denied that, but did say it was due to a broken foot, which I'm not buying too much.

I would think a better way to protest would to not get in the ring. Humiliating yourself and all the people around you doesn't do himself any justice.

That wasn't a protest it was a farce. Kalib planned on getting in the ring, ruining the fight for Nate and the fans who paid hard earned money to watch and running with the ufc's $ for doing nothing. There are plenty of ways to protest and make a statement without looking like a ***git. Pity Kalib doesn't know that huh?

Heh, what a ridiculous explanation. Does Starnes plan on not fighting again, because that performance was so bad it might affect his standing with other organizations who might have thought about signing him.
It would be the height of stupidity to sabotage a fight, and possibly a career, just to make a statement. There's plenty of ways to make said statement without looking like a ***** in the octagon.

He was either flat out scared, or it was fatigue. Fatigue can make a man turn into a coward. I think that he was just intimidated, and his natural instinct (fight or flight) took over. Flight was obviously his instinct.

If flight truly was his instinct, he is in the wrong game.

I wouldn't sign him as a promoter, if he gets pissy he'll turn in a performance like that? can't take that risk.

Starne's statement on that same site dated 4/24/08 says the he DID basically refuse to engage because of the **** way UFC takes care of their fighters (no medical coverage, fighters pay for their own physicals, fighters get less than 10k for a ppv bout, etc). He mentions injuries but this is the main point. Injuries would be real costly esp if the guy doesn't have their own health insurance that will cover them.
