People make things up too much. Hall and Jones tested positive for "high levels" of testosterone in urine(?). In 2000 this would have implied high T/E ratios (>6/1 or 8/1) since this was what was tested at the time. Ripped fuel was the excuse. All else seem to have been made up afterwards.
Fans of boxing are in denial. Fans of every other sport here in America are aware that 90% if not more are using PED's against the rules or outright illegally. But for some reason it is the boxing fans, in a sport where your body directly matters more than others, who are naive to reality. Go to your local gym. You will have no problems finding multiple steroid users. And not just anabolics... If you went to high school here in America, you will know that the local football team with no future college-bound athletes were on steroids... If you went out of your way to read about steroids in the workplace, you will see that it is a regular occurrence and problem among policeman and models alike... You can go out of your way and read about the history of PED use in sports. It dates back to the Olympic days, but when it comes to the modern notion of PED's, it goes well back before the 1960's.
I love how with his history and this statement that he still comes out and says that no fighter should get tested beyond that of the local commission and any requests for additional tests show they are scared and don't want the fight... Love it.
@ Glass Jaw Roy calling it a 'lucky' punch. Did feather fisted Glen Johnson also throw a 'lucky' punch too? :rofl
Now I see where all these clowns get their info from this guy is a hack ! So steroids give your more punching power and speed How did Berto do against Ortiz Or Vargas against Oscar ? And if Mosley was on steroids for most of,his career than why didn't he blow out. Vernon Forrest or Winy Wright out the water ? None of those 2 became more explosive nor did they get faster ! This just proves that all the drama queens that ***** about steroids have no clue as to how it works in a boxing ring !! I finally see how some clowns around here get their info from
DryIrishStump, This is in reply to John Hively's article that you have uploaded. This guy's entitled to his opinion, like everyone else. But here are a few points to consider. 1. Roy didn't weigh in for the Ruiz fight, five months after scaling 175. His fight with Clinton Woods, was on the 7th of September, 2002. His fight against Ruiz, was on the 1st of March, 2003. That's almost a 6 month period. Also, 175 was the weigh in weight. His actual fight night weight, I believe was 182 for Woods. Mackie Shillstone says that when Roy joined him in camp for the Ruiz fight, he was already 192 with 8.7 percent body fat. During camp, Mackie changed his body fat to 6%. If you watch the documentary - The Sweet Science, that covers Roy in the build up to the fight, the official weight wasn't calibrated properly. Marc Ratner admitted he'd made a mistake, and he weighed Roy again, just before the fight. The balance beam scales read 199, but he was 196, if you allowed three pounds for his clothing. So from weighing 182 in September 02, to weighing 196 in March 03, that's a difference of 14 pounds, in almost a 6 month period. 2. He claims that Roy had 8 months to shed the Ruiz weight. But according to Roy's trainer Alton Merkerson, Roy kept his physique, in the hope of landing other HW fights. From book excerpts and links that I've read, a Holyfield fight was almost made in June 03, before Holyfield opted to fight James Toney instead, due to him being unhappy with Don King. Then two months later in August, a deal to fight Corrie Sanders was in place, until Roy went back and asked for extra money. Roy also met Mike Tyson in Miami, to discuss a potential fight. In the end, he couldn't get the big money HW fight he wanted, so the Tarver fight was signed in September 03. So it appears that Roy didn't have 8 months to lose the weight. Also, Mackie Shilstone told Roy not to take the Tarver fight, and told him to stay at HW. In Mackie's opinion, burning muscle can effect a persons immune system. 3. I find it ridiculous where he's asked the questions - "Was it steroids that broke Hill's ribs?" "Was it steroids that enabled Roy to drop Reggie Johnson?" Who is this guy? Richard Hall tested TEN times over the level of acceptance, yet suffered an absolute beating at the hands of Roy. Yet Hall would then go on to fight Dariusz M twice, causing him problems. The writer also states that punching with steroids in the system is like wearing a loaded glove, and a fighters speed can also be artificially enhanced. He also states that a fighters reflexes can be effected in a positive way, and that taking steroids is the equivalent of wearing face and body armour. Is this guy for real? 4. The writer then questions why Roy looked so listless against Glen Johnson. Yet doesn't take into account, that Roy had jumped back into the ring just months after his devastating knockout to Tarver. According to Alton Metkerson and Roy's father, Roy had just gone through the motions in training, and it appeared that he just wanted to fight ASAP to eradicate the loss. Antonio Tarver also gave his opinion, saying that he thought Roy had jumped back into the ring too soon. Also, according to Roy, the ringside doctor said that he was severley dehydrated, and that's why he was out cold for as long as he was after Johnson had dropped him. 5. The writer also questions why Roy had ran for his life in the third fight with Tarver, and why he'd lost all of his attributes? Yet he doesn't take into account, that Roy had suffered two devastating knockouts, he'd been out of the ring for more than a year, and he was approaching his 37th birthday. In 2003, Buddy McGuirt admitted that he thought Roy was on the slide, and in 2004, so did Alton Merkerson and Stanley Levin. So this writer clearly hasn't taken into account, the following things: Roy's style of fighting. His attributes that he showed when he was younger. His age. The number of fights he'd had. The effects of the weight loss. His mental state after two devastating defeats. The guy seems completely biased, implying that Roy was on steroids up to the Ruiz fight, and then all of sudden, he was getting beat. He's also, as noted, written things that are incorrect, and his style of writing, doesn't appear like he was trying to be objective in any way. :good
He also didn't drop 20 or 25 pounds of muscle either. You can't have it both ways. Jones just had his Glass Jaw shattered. Lou Del Valle almost did it years before. Jones just can't take a punch.
You must have me mistaken with someone else.. Roy lost close to 10 lbs of muscle for Tarver. And Del Valle did not come close to knocking Roy out.. You probably didn't even watch that fight as I did.
