Tyson had mad technique! You must be neophytes to boxing:D. I would say the Klitschkos more that Tyson rely on their physical attributes. And Ricky Hatton, Jeff Lacy if he hasn't been mentioned. Some poster said that Mayweather vs Hatton was the pretty boy vs the ugly boy of boxing. I liked that.

Absolutely. Roy was incredibly skilled. He used his gifts to be the most effective fighter in the world. Same can be said for Pacquiao.

    Mike Tyson from '89 onwards.
Relied on nothing but power and chin and beat the likes of Bruno, Ruddock, Botha, Golota etc

I suppose a lot of the things that made Jones great could not be done without insane athleticism.

He was skilled no doubt and I don't think anyone is saying he's not. However, his tool shed relied heavily on his reflexes and ultimate speed. He could do the things he could because he was moving like in the matrix, everyone else was in slo mo for him. If he did not have that freakish speed and reaction, he could not do what he did imo.

No boxer gets far on power/athleticism alone.

I've always thought Manny was a B or B- boxer who has insane athleticism and power.

Granted, he isn't black so I guess my hypothesis is wrong.

Big George. He couldn't even punch with proper technique and still walked over everyone with his power.

I agree with this. He generated power so effortlessly.

I also think Ali. I don't see him going too far without his speed, reflexes, agility, stamina and chin. In fact, without having all those attributes at a level that approached superhuman I think he would have had a disasterous career. But you build your style around your ability.

That doesn't mean he wasn't incredibly skilled. It just so happened that his skillset was catered for his body, built and athleticism. That's what fighters do, everyone style is different based on their attributes, you can't expect everyone to fight a certain way ie JMM because that is technically what is considered textbook skills. Take Wlad for example, if he woke up one day and was 5'10 his skillset wouldn't be so applicable, it doesn't mean he wasn't skilled as a tall man, same with Tyson if he woke up to be 7'0. That's what happened with RJJ, the attributes he had built his skills around were no longer there.

I wouldn't say he has that much power, his KO rate's not very high- given his level of opposition outside his last 3, and prior to Malignaggi didn't have a KO for a good while.

I think the Mallignaggi KO will be a similar situation to how people though Alexander had very good power going off the Urango KO.

I was thinking more athleticism. Not supplemented with any skill.
