I have been watching a lot of 80's fights, lately and I wondered how Wilfred Benitez would have done against Floyd. Benitez basically schooled Duran and he had everything Floyd has got; great speed, reflexes, defence. His chin might not have been as good, but he was a decent puncher with a higher workrate than Floyd. How would Floyd cope when he would be faced with someone who could make him lead and counter him? Would it develop into a boring chess match ? Benitez also had an excellent jab which is a punch that has troubled Floyd in the past. Also, wouldn't Benitez have gone through Mayweather's opposition pretty easily? I think Floyd is a great fighter, but I really give Benitez a great chance against him at Wilfred's best.
1. Floyd would win a decision because he's better at the same thing. 2. Benitez would not go through Mayweather's opposition easily. He'd fall apart after winning some fights. Mayweather has been an elite fighter since 99. Benitez had a prime of about three years.
I don't know about the opposition part, but in terms of a H2H match up I'd pick Benitez, mostly because he had a lot more pop on his punches than Floyd does, but it could go either way. Against Duran, for whatever reason Duran wasn't throwing combinations and wasn't quite at his best, but Benitez did beat him fair and square. Benitez won his first title at 17 and burned out rather quickly. On the plus side he only trained for about a week when he lost to SRL and still it was a very competitive fight, with SRL saying he was one of the hardest guys to hit that he ever fought.
Cheers guys, you both make valid points. Benitez's prime was very short in fairness, but he was very talented. I didn't start the post to knock Floyd, by the way.
a focused Wilfred would beat Floyd, would be a competitive fight, but Benitez could do it.Mayweather would just be a notch behind.
May JR, knocks him out, Benitez, didn't have Floyds chin, or boxing ability, he he was ok beat a past his best Duran, but it's hard to see a guy with little power winning this fight no way in hell he stops him so hows he gonna win??:nut Benetiz was only good for a few years, Floyd has been on top for over 10 years, he's the top dog in this match...
If they're both peak it doesn't really matter who's peak lasts longer because at the time of the fight, they're both at their best. And no way does Mayweather hit harder than Benitez. Wikipedia: "Benitez again moved up in weight, and on May 23, 1981, at age 22, he became the youngest three-time world champion in boxing history by knocking out WBC World Super Welterweight Champion Maurice Hope in twelve rounds in Las Vegas. The knockout was named one of the knockouts of the year." Does Mayweather even have any knock outs at 154? That would be no.
I remember that knockout. Being a Brit, I was rooting for Maurice, but Benitez iced him with one shot. Wilfred was really talented but an erratic trainer, I believe.
Benitex, PRIME Benitez beats him. Look at who Benitez fought !! His only flaw was lack of focus in training and sometimes his chin. Floyd is unable to exploit that chin and let me tell you that prime Benitez was one, slick dude ! And he id it against TOP caliber fighters...At 140 ,147 and 154 It,s Benitez.
competitive fight but I think Floyd has the edge in speed and Benetez the better legs but Wilfredo was taller and may have had the better reach This would be Floyds toughest test
Dont know if this is even the case. Wilfred was very quick handed as well and punched at strange times. Hard to anticipate his punches.
Floyd,s defense is awesome but... Prime El Radar, could stand right in front of you and make you miss... And,don,t kid yourselves about speed. 140 lbs of Benitez was very fast ...
Floyd is more textbook and Benitez more unorthodox, Mayweather could exploit his technical flaws. Floyd could set up punches and use his jab to the body against Benitez who fought with his hands low. The defense of Benitez is based on speed and anticipation, he would slip his opponents punches. Mayweather uses speed and anticipation as well, however he also uses skills and technique. He doesn't just slip punches either, he ducks, rolls, blocks, and parries punches. Floyd has a more creative offense as well as a more efficient defense. For everyone comparing opponents I don't believe he'd be hit as much as Benitez who was in fact hitable. Along with that I don't believe he'd beat Ray Leonard but, I don't believe Mayweather would get stopped by Leonard. I go with Mayweather by decision.
