Frank Bruno looking absolutely terrified against Mike Tyson and folding every time (despite catching him with some good shots and not following up)
The fighters that got me into boxing losing: Tyson - losing against Holyfield and Lewis, the Lewis loss in particular, which was just a painful beating. Benn - quiting on his stool Hamed - seemed unbeatable and destined for ATG status. The Barrera defeat was a shock, the lack of a real comeback compounded this. Benn/Eubank - losing against a unsensational Collins was pretty sad, especially the way a shot Benn lost. But I reckon Eubank knicked the rematch
Hearing on sports radio that Arguello was KO'd by Pryor fight #1. Then when I finally saw how brutal it was made it worse. Him lying there KTFO still saddens me. Very glad he was not seriously hurt..
watson collapsing after eubank rematch....i know its said a lot, but..watson had so so much left to offer the sport of boxing..
The most disappointing boxing memory is when a fighter dies because of a fight.(during the fight or after the fight)
I remember watching the McCllelan-Benn fight on Showtime. I was so sad seeing what happened to McCllelan during and after the fight. He was so close to winning the fight in the first round.
Hearing tha Kid Akeem had a blood clot after his fight with Robert Quiroga. He would die a few years later at the age of 25. If any of you haven't seen that fight, check it out on youtube. Both guys gave their all in Ring magazines 1991 fight of the year. Unfortunatly one paid with his life.
.............Great fight, but that's not true about him dying after the fight. He lived, was partially paralyzed for a time; in need of money, Akeem turned to selling drugs, for which he ran into trouble wth the law. After dealing with that, he wanted to return to the ring, the only thing he ever knew. Of course he couldn't resume his career in the U.S., he couldn't be licensed any more, so he returned home to Africa, where an unscrupulous promoter set him up in a fight. That was the fight that killed him. He shouldn't have been anywhere near a ring. Just a few years ago now, Quiroga himself died. Stabbed to death over some argument at a friend's house with a biker-gang member. Sad endings for both.
I knew Akeem semi recovered, but I was always under the impression he died from complication. Thanks for filling me in with the details.
pryor knocking arguello out twice douglas knocking out tyson benn knockin out g-man in what came as gerald's last fight due to the blood clot in which affected his brain. roy loosin to montell griffin 1st fight roy getting knocked out by antonio tarver in the 2nd fight michael katsidis getting clocked by casamayold when i was rooting for katsidis.
Three bouts are seared in my mind: 1. Sitting ringside with my Dad at Yankee Stadium in the most oppressive heat and humidty I've ever experienced and seeing my hero, Sugar Ray Robinson (who gave me boxing tips) wilt against Joey Maxim. 2. Seeing the great Joe Louis sprawled unconscious on the ring apron against Rocky Marciano. 3. Knowing, like everyone else at Madison Square Garden, there was no way Benny Paret, who was tangled in the ring ropes, was gonna survive Emille Giffith's fussilade.
