I don't know what to title this so I'll just give it the generic title...

    Overrated Victories...

    Basically I'd like, if possible, to see a list of fights where the underdog managed to pull out the victory and everyone assumed he was really great for it when really it was just a simple matter of "styles make fights"...

    A quick example, Chris Algieri vs Ruslan Provodnikov... An obvious one really...

    Anything Algieri goes on to accomplish from this point forward would be due entirely to his height/length and boxing style... For example, I think he could outbox Juan Manuel Marquez, who's a top p4p and ATG fighter... Despite the name on his resume, it wouldn't make him great, and wouldn't make (for example, please relax Pac fans) Pac's victory over him any better... At least REALISTICALLY it wouldn't (I'm sure Lampley and others would have a field day with it though)

    ^^^^Please don't turn this thread into a "Whine About Pac/May" thead because of that statement... It's just an opinion, and that's not what this thread is about...

    Just give me other examples of a guy that beat a good to great fighter because of nothing more than a stylistic and/or size advantage... Then went on to get smashed by just about every other name opponent they faced...

    Don't see what you mean? Are you saying Herrera's win over Garcia is overrated, or like, Garcia's win over Matthysse is overrated because of Herrera

    Ah yes, Douglas was a big, tall superheavyweight with a very effective jab, knew how to control distance and tie up when he needed to. That would always be a very effective style against Tyson:good

    I don't know how to respond so I'll just make a generic response.

    Sorry, just kidding.

    I understand your 'styles make fights' point to a degree, but I don't understand your point above.

    Isn't anything any boxer accomplishes due entirely to their physical attributes and styles (i.e. the way they apply those attributes)?

    I mean, any fight Joe Frazier ever won was due to his big left hook and his bob-and-weave style, right? So that style worked against a lot of guys, including Ali in the FOTC, but not against Foreman.

    May not be your intent, but it seems like you're using this line of thinking to somehow minimuze the accomplishements of some fighters while saying other fighters were truly great -- as if their greatness has nothing to do with their physical attributes and their styles in applying them?

    For instance, take away Tyson's speed and power and the style he fought and Quick Tillis probably boxes his ears off.

    Yeah I don't know, LOJ. I actually didn't have Algieri beating Ruslan. Just frustrating him and winning a Long Island Decision. Even if he didn't score too many points of his own, he took away Ruslan's overhand right money punch and showed that Ruslan has no idea how to feint.

    Beating a better fighter purely on style? It's a good question though. Maybe Bradley-Pacquiao or even Whitaker-Chavez, where just frustrating the favorite was enough in the judges' eyes to win rounds for the challenger.
