Just got a chance to see the Lee-Korobov KO and it seemed if he had taken a knee and an 8-count to clear his head when he first got hit he might have been able to see out the round. Instead he stayed standing, taking punishment, leading to the TKO stoppage. If you take a knee then you give up a 10-8 round (wasn't Korobov ahead a couple on the cards though? Haven't seen the whole thing), but if you stay standing at best you will lose 10-9 and the judges might score it a 10-8 anyway if you take a pounding. I don't know what it's like to be in that situation, maybe instinct to stay on your feet kicks in, but it seems to me fighters could take a knee and survive the round more often than they do.
He should have done that. His legs looked shaky so i don't know if he would have even lasted the round if he did take a knee. I dunno maybe for pride. Maybe he thought he could take the shots and shake it off.
I think a lot of fighters aren't thinking clear enough at that point to come up with that obvious solution. I doubt it has to do with pride in most cases, although for some it obviously does.
True. You haven't got your best thinking cap on having taken a peach of a shot! But you often see boxers take a knee if they have been hurt to the body.
Yep, if you have just been hit bang on the chan and rocked to your boots the scoring system probably isnt top of your mind
Lol! The bodyshots make you take a knee. The thing is that with a bodypunch, the fighters head is still clear. However their body is throbbing with pain.:good. Good thread. I always wondered about that until, I got hit with some hard shots..at first I punched back, but something in me told me to hold. Not once did I think about taking a knee. I think some fighter have the Jake Lamotta attitude.
Machismo. That's why it's impressive when a fighter knows to take a knee (Bradley, Algieri). Veteran move.
In almost 20 years of boxing I've never taken a knee (I have been stopped on my feet) and as mentioned above here is why: Pride, insinct, and simply not being in the mindset to do so. When your hit with a real good shot, you are buzzed and not in a decision making mode. Its usually smart to hold, because this is an easier thing to do when your in autopilot.
I took knees when I was doing karate ... **** pride, honor is a fool word for not doing what needs to be done.
I personally tried taking a knee in the fourth grade, the asswhippin continued. That was my last time taking a knee. Maybe some fighters have had similar experiences ?
