With fighters like Pernell Whitaker you can literally show the great fighters he beat in the amateurs.

But a lot of these Tyrell Biggs' they never beat the world's #1.

Audley would be the oldest undisputed champion in any weight.

1984 Class was the best with Whitaker, Holyfield, Tillman, Biggs, Taylor, Hill, Tate, Breland, McCrory, Gonzalez, and Page. I believe seven out of eleven became champions, all time greats include Whitaker and Holyfield.

If we're talking about how successful they were as pros, 84 gets my vote.

In addition to the Americans you had:

    Lewis
    Fenech
    Damiani
    Havna
    Christophe Tiozzo
    Hiranaka
    Stecca
    Clinton

....all of whom won world titles (admittedly with one or two asterisks in there)

There were also familiar names like Alex Stewart and Drake Thadzi.

If you picked the best from the entire field, I can't think of any other tournaments that can top Holyfield, Whitaker, Lewis, Taylor, Fenech and Hill as a top 6.

Yeah, there are even more world class operators when you dig (below). When you look at 88 though you need to taken into account the Cuban non-participation.

    Wayne McCullough
    Johnny Bredahl
    Kennedy McKinney
    Regilio Tuur
    Giovanni Parisi
    Kostya Tszyu
    Ike Quartey
    Laurent Boudouani

    Vincenzo Nardiello
    Richard Woodhall
    Sven Ottke
    Henry Maske
    Andrzej Golota
    Ray Mercer
    Rid**** Bowe
    Lennox Lewis
