It wasn't overnight. He suffers a bad knee injury when he's 37, struggles through his next fight, and two years later collapses in the ring.

Boxing is a fiercly competative sport (for most divisions) - although it may not seem it at times...

A long life of sports left Martinez with a only a short period whereby he could achieve what he did.

I had Martinez beating Cotto comfortably (with the asterisk stating only if he was injury free)

He was injury free...but his knees were shot to sh*t

The Martin Murray fight was telling...but alot of people felt that it was just because Sergio didn't take it seriosly enough.

You don't see how going from the best p4p fighter in the world one year, to off the top 10 list the very next year is a sharp fall? :blood Are you understanding what is being said?

A sharp fall is going from a high place to a low place quickly... suddenly. The topic of this thread.

Roy Jones went from 1st, to off the entire top 10 list.... in a span of a year.

    That is a sharp fall.

the signs started to become more reality by then. he was never all that good to begin, hell of a career for a soccer player but his greatest win was against a 3/4 dead chaves jr.

serg wouldn't go anywhere near jr anywhere close to a half safe weight for jr. 3/4 dead jr was beat by scoring but he ended serg's run so serg lost the war

This has become the most overused and misapplied phrase regarding him.

Are you kidding? Sergio tore his ACL and screwed up his knee. And for an athletic fighter, that makes a difference. Many more have fallen quicker.

He has decline a lot due to obvious injures so I don't count that. I say Juan Manuel Lopez hit the wall and declined like he aged fast and the other is Dzinziruk maybe he couldn't keep his weight down anymore.

They all relied on athleticism instead of technique and once those reflexes dull a bit they fall off real fast.

I wonder how much time Martinez actually spent on boxing in the gym after Jr broke him? :think
With all the therapy and surgeries, i doubt he trained more than 6 months for Murray and Cotto combined.
