Particularly at 140-154. Even with the day before weigh in, there's not many fighters above 175-180 cm at these weights. Margarito and Clottey were quite tall, but they'd struggle to even make 160 with the same day weigh in. Most of the top guys around these weights are quite compact: Bradley, Canelo, Cotto etc even though they boil down a lot in most cases. And Pac and Floyd sure aren't tall compared to many of the great welters of the past. Why is this? Just chance or an adaptation to changes in the sport?
Interesting topic. Could be weight training maybe these stocky guys would be a division lower 20 years ago and guys normally in the division are 160 today.
theres no doubt that sports are always evolving. it should be noted back in the day they had same day weigh ins
Because Mayweather and Pac who aren't particularly big fight at 147. So all the guys in the neighbourhood move up or down to get to that division (Porter going down, guys like Alexander, Bradley, Khan, Guerrero, Maidana etc - up).
i have to start reading your guys join dates and post counts before i engage in conversation with.. that other thread is a prime example i gave you the same respect id give a valued poster and then you slowly but surely started to just go blatent troll.. :huh awell to each there own i guess ?
It's because Mayweather and Pacquiao were cherry picking in-house opponents from Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions. They threw the division into a funk, both by offering fighters money to come up in weight and fighters coming up in weight to see if they could get a fight. Once those 2 are gone things should come back to their natural order.
Actually I also will add to what I said. Pac and May actually made people fight at their natural weight. Pac and May don't really cut weight, however once they leave, the big welters will dominate the division again. Right now all the big welters have been avoided and get no show time.
