My name is Joy, and I am so glad I found this forum! I just started boxIing training (without a local coach for now, I am moving to Vancouver in 7 monthes and will train at Sugar Rays when I move there).

My altheletic background includes gymnatics, BJJ, and Roller Derby (currently Play for the Nanaimo Team, will play with a Vancouver team when I move). I have loved boxing since I was a child (my dad and I watch fights together), and have followed MMA since the first Ultimate Fighter Challenge in 1993.

I have just started Sticky's conditioning programmed (which wasn't a whole lot different than what I was doing already, just more weight training days, 5 instead of 3). I would love to spar at some point, but will rely on my boxing coach to let me know when it's the right time for that, I'm assuming it will take 6 monthes to a year of commitment to even consider that. Not sure if there are a lot of ladies my age (44), or weight class (Bantam).

Just intorducing myself and saying ello to the forum! Glad to meet you all:smooch

Welcome, and i hope you enjoy your new journey.
I can tell you, it's been personally one of the most rewarding things i've ever done. I was addicted from day one and it's all I think about.
You seem to have a good athletic background, which will hopefully serve you well physically and mentally. I had no athletic background, and though not an amazingly talented fighter, still managed to accomplish a lot more than I ever expected. So aim high, and enjoy the ride. Age surely gives you a shorter window of time, but if you're in good shape, you'll have plenty of opportunities to show em' up.
Just be patient and take things one day at a time. Progress won't happen overnight, but you'll no doubt live for those moments when stuff just "clicks".
    Glad to have you here!

I'm not sure what to make of your comment.
But i'm only speaking from personal experience. I started at 36 and my window's closing soon (39). Yep, the knees have had it. But i'm gonna give it a good run this year and go for a second shot at a national championship before the knee caps totally shrivel up and die.

My advice is to not wait 6 months before starting to spar.

Dont miss any training sessions if you can help it and make a point of watching other people spar in the gym. Then after a month or two you should jump in. Don't delay it too long else you are just slowing your own development. The things you will pick up in your first few sparring sessions will accelerate your training by quantum leaps.

For your safety (and looks) I would also recommend sparring with headgear with a facebar. Also make sure your sparring partner is wearing 16oz SPARRING gloves and test the padding of the gloves to make sure it hasnt bottomed out.

See how the glove does not go through?

Some facebar headgears, any of these will work, but don't just go and randomly buy a headgear not on this list, it might be a waste of money.

Winning is obviously #1, and also #1 at breaking the bank.
If the Winning is too expensive for you then I would say to get the Ring to Cage.

TLDR The focus of boxing training is and always will be SPARRING! Get in there as soon as you can, but use the right equipment and bring confidence and a learning attitude into the ring.
