Jones would be able to hit Calzaghe regularly, but I don't expect Calzaghe would spend much time posturing and waiting. I think it would be feint-feint-bumrush-flurry-get countered-back off-repeat. I don't see Jones having the space he needed to land with power. He'd land a lot, but not those full-power shots that were slaughtering everybody. Plus he'd be fighting at somebody else's pace, not his own. That could prove to be his undoing. Even Toney wasn't a fast-paced fighter, and if you got into a slow-paced fight with Jones and gave him space he'd wreck you. Jones might drop Calzaghe coming in, but I think Calzaghe would be on him the whole time and make it an inside fight where Jones couldn't use his long-range power shots. If Jones drops Calzaghe more than once, Jones wins a decision. If not, Calzaghe takes it on volume punching and smothering Jones' work.
Foxy getting exposed as an ignorant Jones hating fool in his thrashing by the hands of Loudon. Joe himself said he was better than the green version that beat Eubank and I believe him. I am sure most Calzaghe fans would agree that Hopkins was a more complete fighter at 43 than he was at 28 when Jones beat him.. It isn't the number that matters, it is the fighter and the circumstances... Some fighters are completly shot at 30, some age like wine and can fight into their 40's. I believe Calzaghe could have still been effective in his 40s.
Good post. I respect your opinion. But I can't envisage Joe beating him at all. There's no scenario where I see Joe winning. I don't think Joe would have used great volume. I think he'd have stayed back and been ultra cautious. For the first time in his career, he'd have been up against a guy, who offensively, was better than him in every department. :good
That's right, everyone's circumstances are different. I do hope that Foxy returns though, as I was really enjoying our debates.
Sounds like a familiar game plan. It's just hard to see Jones in his prime losing to someone he can hit, and hit regularly.
I also see 168 lbs of Jones hurting Joe... He could pull the trigger thisquick and with power. Jones @160-168 could crack !!
I've watched them both during their careers and to me, like Loudon has said, Jones is simply on another level. At his best he was an extremely elite fight and I won't pick many fighters to beat him between 168-175.
