REPEATING THE BASICS CREATE GREAT CHAMPIONS http://www.westernpeople.ie/news/story/?trs=eyaumhmhsn&cat=sport This is an article written by the "western warrior" Henry Coyle, and published by The Western People.
I think that that is the best thing about Irish boxing at the moment - look how strong Ulster boxing is - they were used to plenty of pro boxing in Belfast and that gave kids something to aspire to and in turn helped the amateur game. After a lull thankfully pro boxing is back in Belfast. In the same vein I think that pro boxing cards in their local area with boxers they can identify with will help more kids get into gyms. Growing up in Sligo Town as a kid I didnt really care about boxing (it was just something the father stayed up in the middle of the night to listen to on the radio) then when I was seven or eight he brought me to watch my brother fight in a county final and I was hooked their after (I remember booing his opponant on the way to the ring - it was the last time I ever booed a boxer because I still got the pain in the back of my head from the punch the ould fella gave me) - what I am saying is kids need to be able to have something tangible to cling onto to get into boxing and high profile local shows aid that no end. I know Dougie can confirm this but Vinny Feeney was bitterly dissapointed that he never got to fight in Sligo.
i was always disapointed the way sligo..and ireland for that matter didnt sit up and take more notice of vinny..he fought on sky sports many times and fought for the wbc intercontinental bantamweight title..and on paper was only one fight away from a world title shot...but the people on the street at the time didnt know too much about him.. anyway...maybe the same can be said for a lot of boxers like him.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IrvQVTAjvA This content is protected
I remember that picture being in McNialias's window on High Street for weeks after he won the southern area title.
Vinny Feeney looks a little like a young Jack Dempsey in that picture! Nice column by Henry Coyle. Good luck lad
I have just read that Team Duddy have replaced Don Turner with Pat Burns[Jermaine Taylors old trainer, although something is telling me at the back of my skull that Taylor has returned to Burns].Is this a good move?
hhmmmmm - Moorsey himself seems to think its all bollocks, well not exactly bollocks but he posted this a few days ago and no mention of the fight in Ireland, and is fighting on the Hatton undercard - http://www.boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1160822&highlight=#1160822
Slapbangwhallop, Yeah, I'm in a bit of a pickle all right. I've reported what I have understood to be good information. If I'm wrong, then I can't show my face around here again 'cos any semblance of credibility I had is in ruins. However, if I'm right then I'll pat myself on the back. The Moore-Baysangurov fight was to have taken place before June, its obviously put back if he is fighting on Hatton's undercard in May. If it is put back until, shall we say September/October, then a second warm-up fight for the Euro in Ireland in July is perfectly logical. From what I understand, it should all be cleared up either way by the end of the week. The details of the European title fight should be clear and made public. So, I'll either look a right muppet and slink away forever, or (as I am hoping, obviously) I have my credibility intact. I report what I hear from Tommy Egan and people close to him. He hasn't let me down yet in all the time I've known him, to give him his due. Another thing, Gerry Callan has reported it in the Star last Friday, the Irish News has said it, Steve Wellings also, etc. We can't all be reporting something unless there is something in it.
What is public knowledge is that Jamie Moore was Tommy Egan's guest at the Macklin-Campas fight. The two can clearly be seen sitting together on RTE behind Bernard Dunne and Ricky Hatton when those two were interviewed before the fight. Both went to the after-fight party together and introductions all round were made. Photos with fans were taken, autographs signed, etc. It's not incontrovertible evidence, but its pretty circumstantial.
alrite lads, who do u think is the greatest irish boxer of all time? i would say the pocket rocket.. fine chin, huge heart. gave us some real wars with boxings elite...
If you count irish Americans then I would say Billy Conn or Gene Tunney. There were a lot of great irish fighters in this era that with all due respect to Wayne far overshadow his resume.
greatest irish fighter of all time, let's make a shortlist and everyone on the thread can vote,we can make this a thread within a thread, try to get as much video of each fighter up as possible;we should make a shortlist first, ill start with 1990-now; collins mccullough mccauley damaen kelly bernard dunne eamonn magee duddy brian magee mickey ward ray close i'm sure there's a few i forgot about and i'm sure the old men on this thread can woo us with stories of past glories i reckon from that wee shortlist we keep collins, wayne, dave boy, eamonn magee, and duddy. btw doire abu, beating the kerry men today in an apparantly great game to win the NFL division one, derry for sam.
Hello Podge, boxing exists on maybes, could offs, probabilities and possibilities, but you have brought us some of the juiciest information in a long time.If Moore doesn,t fight in Ireland on the 12th of July, well that's boxing.Boxers and promoters talk for ages and nothing happens all the time.So don't beat yourself up about it. In my opinion what your saying sounds pretty authenic, Slapbangwallop is winding you up. So friend anything you hear in future, pass it on [if you have the time, that is], it will be much appreciated.:good Now Podge, who do you think are the greatest Irish boxers of all time?:huh
