This will be Knockout's 1st defense of his WBA strawweight title.

Rachman was recently, din obscuritate, ranked #9 by the WBA having not fought at the weight in forty-two months. He did capture this same belt just three matches ago, when he knocked out Ekavit Songnui aka Kwanthai Sithmorseng aka Kwanthai Chor Nor Pattalung in April 2011 - but lost in his first defense to Pornsawan Porpramook that July. The now-43 year old then returned from a layoff of two years, campaigning at light flyweight, and has gone 2-0 (2) up at 108lbs in the eighteen months since with his opponents combining for a 21-18 mark.

How "the Rock Breaker" became a ranked contender at straw having been absent from the division for going on four years (and last seen there in a defeat) is a mystery.

The outcome here isn't, however. The only question is whether Knockout scores a...well, lowercase knockout of the durable old Indonesian. :think

Hopefully the next defense is a step back towards credibility.

I was actually hoping for a Buitrago rematch. I guess that was asking too much.

To call this a big disappointment would be an understatement. (all due respect to Rachman..but 43 year old down at these bottommost weights may as well be 63. Granted, him rallying at 40 to stop an unbeaten Thai for a world titlewas commendable...I just don't see him replicating the feat this much further down the road, and having not made the weight in nearly four years)

Nice to see Asian boxing ripping this fight a new one then questioning the WBA on twitter about the ranking. Absolutely turgid from the "ASSociation"

We tried to keep out of politcs on forums however this is one one of the most scummy moves we've seen. If Knockout wants the fight he can have it as a non-title bout, a stay busy bout like so many Thai's have on a regular basis.

It was clear when we spotted his ranking that something funny was going on but it wasn't until Pal informed us of Knockout's intentions that we realised the elephant in the room.

Thais winning in Thailand is why that's not much of an upset.

By the way, Flea Man - I've been following your cue with calling him by his birth name (as you said) of Thammanoon Niyomtrong - but how sure of that were you?

Boxrec now lists a birth name for him (didn't before) - Newlukrak Pagonponsurin. Is that just another of his aliases used, or is that his actual printed-on-his-birth-certificate (or census) appellation?

Think James Goyder did a piece on him and that was the Muay Thai name he used.
