are you being serious doug,of the modern era or of alltime?he was a great fighter but just didnt win enough fights to be considered the best irishman of this era imo.

 

I've always felt that Eamonn Magee was the most talented - but its not about how good you are its about what you achieve and McGuigan, Collins, McCullough, McAuley all did more on that count.
I think I have to go for McGuigan

 

Interesting tip, (not sure why but I got a good feeling about this ) Sounds like it could be a good move. Maybe get the right "chemistry"this time!

 

Irish greats... don't forget "sailor Tom Sharkey". Fought in America right after Sullivan, but born in Dundalk. Most old time experts consider him one of the toughest ever.

honestly,where did you get this info from,i think it would be a great move for john because jermain under his last trainer was a completely different animal to what he was under steward,combinations etc were a real part of the game and we dont have to worry about john's stamina at all because in honesty he's one of the fittest boxers on the scene,it would give john some great sparring with a world class fighter around his weight,does anyone know who john's sparring partner was under don turner?

eamon magee was a great fighter to watch,so bloody technically gifted,you could make a film about him his life was so eventful.

i'd go for collins,has a great resume and really was at the stead of the super middleweight division and there is an argument for him being a top 5 smw of all time.

as much as im a fan of joe calzaghe i dont think he could have beat collins back in 97 if they fought,collins just had the knack of killing an opponents heart.

well..from the 80's onward...
those fights with fidel bassa showed me how a great fighter can still end up losing...and i was a very happy young irish lad over in england the night he beat duke mckenzie...i had been talking about him for so long by then as a world champ in waiting...loved all his fights...baby jake matala was a great win in my eyes...
so maybe because of the age i was when i followed his career...late teenager / early 20's...and that i had championed his world title potenial before he won a world title that i maybe have a romantic view of it all...
what did mcguigan do to make him pound for pound better then macauley ??..juan la porte was his best win..pedroza was on his last legs when he beat him..cabera was stopped when he thought he was legally picking up his mouthpiece...and cruz wasn't world class..heat or no heat...

Pat Burns is a defensive type coach? I never got that feeling when he was training Jermain Taylor. This may work out though, I'm clueless to what Duddy's training has been from his last few fights under Turner. Too bad the fights in Boston, I was hoping to see Duddy's next fight but I'll be starting the Academy for the FDNY on the 30th and will need to change my sleeping pattern to waking up at 3:30 am.

 

I'd go for Steve Collins. What a tough SOB.

 

theres no doubt he was tough...but his career is hard to look back on to judge...mc callum was a class apart..chris pyatt was never the greatest wbo champ theres been...{a loss 2 years after collins to steve 'the viking' foster proves that...although foster was great at domestic level}...
eubank was at the stage of his career where he had no killer instinct left...and benn was all but washed-up...
mind you on the other hand he only lost 3 times and all to the highest quality opposition..and retired on a 15 fight winning streak...and he was never stopped...
so..for me...hard to judge...but i do respect your opinion on him boxingdvds..

 

Thats why I loved him I remember watching the first Collins Eubank fight (it was the first pro boxing match i watched live on tv) I was only a chissler at the time but i loved the way eubank was worried in his interviews about collins being hypnotised. Collins had him beaten before they stepped in the ring. I was just so impressed by that at the time and i doubt I'll ever forget it.

Shame about whats gone on in his personal life since.

i hear excatly what you say ardy...but again it could be a romantic view i have on macauley as i had being telling anyone who would listen in the early days that he would be a world champ...{i had the same thing back then telling everyone that kiaso galaxy {spelling??} was the best fighter in the world at the time...but am always put in my place when i say it these days }
out of curiosity...who do you think was mcguigans best wins against?...
i remember, but only watching on the telly, the atmosphere when barry fought...i think it was bernard taylor was his first defence in belfast and watching it on the telly you would think the roof was going to come off the kings hall...and the long lanky fella..before he won the world title..filipo something..again at the kings hall...barry hugged him around the neck and it knocked him out ..i only joke as there was a tremedous left hook to yer mans temple just a couple of seconds before...
but..anyhoo...ardy..tell me...who do you think his best wins were against...and while i have you fella...give me your thoughts on that last fight against mc donnell...
