Sparring between the two. You tell me who got the better of who.

What I saw was Rios snapping Maidana's head back with his shorter, more compact punches. Maidana is too wide.

Thanks for such an amazing display of intellect.

You guys still don't get it. Maidana and Rios are trained by the SAME GUY. And it's quite obvious some of you are not studying styles and just pointing to performances rather than ability.

Maidana with Garcia nearly got knocked out by Lopez in the 4th round. Why? Because Lopez didn't sit while Maidana punched. He punched back and caught him between shots.

Maidana's shots are wide, very wide. When 2 fighters are fighting at close range, the fighter with the shorter/straighter punches have a huge advantage. He'll land faster and he can counter between the wide punches of his opponent. Maidana can't do the same because his punches would fly over Rio's head most of the time.

I don't care how well Maidana performed against Floyd. He was very wide in those fights too. Floyd was just too scared to take advantage. Rios is a bad styles matchup for Maidana, and he will bust him up on the inside.

Maidana's chin isn't shaky. Yes, he's visited the canvas but he recovers well and has never actually been finished off. He also, especially since hooking up with Garcia, doesn't get hit with half of the stupid junk that Rios does. Rios makes Chino seem like Willie Pep.

...and Rios has never slugged it out with anybody that punches like Maidana. (and from such crazy angles, that will be jacking Rios' head all over the place)

I'll repeat it again. They're trained by the same guy. And Rios got the better of Maidana in sparring, countering his wide crazy angle shots, so yes, he has slugged it out with someone who punches like Maidana.

Find the sparring video 4 post up.

C'mon you got to give Bam Bam some credit in the defense department he looked great in there with Mike he was slipping and sliding and didn't get hit with hardly anything Alvarado threw......although that may have something to do with Mike being sluggish from Meth.

Didn't Rios admit to Maidana getting the better of him sparring? Look they spar a lot, and one video doesn't prove anything, I'll take Rios's word over a light sparring video. Rios is way wider than Maidana, did you watch the Chavez fight? Rios is basically a poor man's Maidana, he did look extremely good in the Alvarado fight, but who knows what state Alvarado was in.

19 votes for Rios, 25 votes for Maidana so far. If this fight takes place, it will have one hell of a thread.

sparring is sparring. what you will find is that your amateur level fighters low level boxers treat sparring as a real fight, they try to perfect what they are taught etc etc. but sparring is also ment to experiment with. you are not supposed to come out of it at the end and say "aww i think i won" (though i do and i know alot of people see it that way)

sparring has and will always mean very little in the grand scheme of things. theres a vid of spadafora apparently getting the better of mayweather. now word is mayweather was just beginning a fight camp and was unfit where as spaddy was coming to the end of his so he was primed, who knows if the situation was the same with rios and maidana but i will say this: if spadafora got the better of the best ranked fighter in the world, dont you think that would give him the confidence to step up and face some elite competition ?

it wont as they both train under garcia. and garcia seems INCREDIBLY LOYAL to garcia. maidanas relationship with garcia i have not seen to much of but garcia is regarded as one of the best in the business and theres no doubt he has worked wonders with maidana in the years he trained under him

    Agree with this assessment entirely.

People citing the Victor Ortiz fight which was over 5 years ago now. The problem with that is Maidana has gotten much better and Ortiz gets shjt on in these forums for some reason(s). Oh, and that Maidana KO'd him half way through the fight.

Rios isn't the same fighter who slugged with and took out Acosta and Antillon. And when you realize the difference between those LW's who had limited windows of success and then Maidana... well, to those citing particular fights of Maidana's to build a case against him, you may want to keep away from citing Rios performances that favor him in this style match up. It just isn't there.

People saying Josesito rocked Maidana so Rios will. Do you not understand style clashes? I know it doesn't always go the way logic might say it will... but the way Josesito fights and particularly his punching technique (not saying it's great), range, and the angles isn't comparable to Rios and I think Josesito's style leads to much more success against Maidana, all other things being equal. Oh, and Maidana KO'd him half way through that fight too.

Either way I doubt it happens given that Maidana is with Haymon and Rios is with Arum in addition to the fact that they both have the same trainer. Would be entertaining if it did, but I'd expect Maidana to have several moments of "teeing off" and would think a 116-112 UD would be in order.

chino by KO, i would bet my life on it. rios has a TERRIBLE body, way way way weaker than chinos
