I believe this potential classic is coming up on May 24th. There is bad blood between the two men. Penn had a very close fight with GSP a couple of years back. I know GSP also defeated Sherk but don't know if it was close or one sided. I don't pretend to have a wealth of knowledge here. I do think that Sherk has a reputation for being a powerhouse wrestler with endless stamina and strength. Penn is probably one of the top five mixed martial artists in the world today with great standup (knockout power) otherwordly flexability and one of the absolute best ju jitsu practioners around today. Who do the experts on this forum like in this fight. Thanks!
BJ has about a two round window to get Sherk out of there because he gasses. Luckily for him, he's ridiculously talented and just might sub him in the first 10 minutes.
Sherk has more of a chance than some will admit. He's only lost to Hughes and GSP, both of which beat Penn as well. Of course, it was closer with Penn and GSP than Sherk/GSP and Penn actually beat Hughes once, so everything is still pointing towards Penn winning. However, Sherk has a motor like no one else out there and I wouldn't be surprised if he pushes the pace fast enough to get Penn tired out and beat him. Long story short, I'm pulling for Sherk, but predicting Penn.
For me it's race for Penn to get Sherk out of there before Sherk gases Penn. Sherk maintains a decent pace that I doubt Penn can keep up with for 3 rounds, surely not 5 rounds. I don't see Sherk beating Penn. I think BJ has what it takes to get Sherk out of there in 2 rounds.
Obviously if this fight goes into the 4th and 5th Sherk should take it and take it easily hes always had fantastic strength and endurance steroids or not its something hes had since day 1. When you look at how that match up I gave BJ a fantastic chance and ill tell you why. Hes a fantastic striker and had legitmate KO power including with his knees asking Din Thomas a real quality fighter with a solid chin. Sean Sherk comes in with those shot attempts hes open to be kneed and hard by BJ just like Hermes Franca did quite frequently in July about 5-6 times. BJs super talented and is very smart I could see him trying what Franca did but being able to finish up with it also BJs takedown defense is godly. Dont forget what he did to Matt Hughes is the 1st and was doing until he had his rib broke. Sherk and Hughes are alot like but I consider Hughes a better submission fighter. Sherk could possibly take BJ down early but can he keep him down ? Hes got great ground control but noboddy keeps BJ down for long plus BJs guard is fantastic he could submitt Sherk he could submitt anyone. I expect Sherk to have a hard time getting BJ down in the early rounds and BJ can keep it standing where Sherk is solid but BJs much more dangerous and comfertable on his feet then Sherk is. This fight can go a number of different ways but I got BJ TKO 2.
I think this is best fight so far this year, and maybe in recent history in the sport. I'm very excited for this fight, and really can't pick a winner for sure. There are so many variables working here I don't think anyone can give a definitive reason why one guy will win without being countered by something apparent.
It'll be interesting to see how BJ goes against a more recently active Sherk. Sherk is dangerous at 155 and has incredible strength and cardio. I really like both fighters but if I had to put money on one, it would have to be BJ Penn. I don't think Sherk will be able to dominate Penn with his takedowns and wrestleing as he has done with others at 155. Standing up Penn outguns him IMO opinion, and if it goes to the ground thats going to very dangerous for a BJ sub. Either way both guys are going to come to fight and its going to be exciting :good
Now that Sherk is off the juice. This will be easier than first thought. BJ by any form of choke.. I can also see a tko stoppage. http://www.graciebarraamerica.com/news/?p=542 scroll to the bottom
I actually see Shrek ( stupid joke i know) pace being to much for BJ and possibly winning because of that.
Or you could look at as he just had his entire suspension period to use without cycling off and will come in more monstrous than ever, and he wouldn't have been stupid enough to use deca durablin again. I will definetely laugh if he comes in all flabby though
Actually in this pic..hes shockingly skinny..I know hes cutting to 155 but damn..his traps and overall torso thickness are missing. One thing about Sherk..roids or not hed bring his cardio BJs intent is clear..take Sherks back or gain top position...If he can accomplish either one of those. theres no way hed lose. If BJ somehow knocks Sherk out..then hed be a living legend
its a pick em. but in the end i think bj is just a better fighter. if he gasses hes ****ed though. also it depends on how the roid scandal messed with sherks head
I really want Sherk to win, Penn pisses me off every time he opens his mouth. But my pick is Penn by tko 3.
