People moaning about the lack of publicity scottish is getting. Well Can i ask which top fighter you have, world class other than burns, who is now below world level. But more importantly, a knockout artist and destroyer a puncher, well im looking at the top scottish boxers and ive noticed a recurring trend. None of the top scottish boxers can punch, None of them are bringing fireworks into the ring. its not english bias, The english have a long list off exciting world level boxers, ones that can punch, a puncher will always get more attention and more hype. I can appreciate a good skillful boxer who relies on wit and craft, heart and toughness but dont expect more casual boxing fans to care about this. Im sure hearn is wishing upon a star that scotland can produce an exciting talent with big power that can bring the audiences in. So he can start packing out halls in scotland. The top scottish boxers and prospects: Willie Limond KO% 23.81 David Brophy KO% 7.69 Stephen simmons KO% 45.45 (One good ko win over wadi camacho) Gary Cornish KO% 52.63 (mainly poor opposition. couldnt ko larry O) Ricky Burns KO% 26.19 Am i being too harsh or have i got a point? I cant think of any scottish boxers that are bringing the heat for sellout crowds.
Fair enough point I think, from what I have seen there isn't a load of talent coming out of Scotland but saying that Burns wouldn't have caught everyones attention on his way up like Khan or more flashy type boxers have, so one could just slip under the radar
Don't need to be a ko machine to be exciting problem is many just aren't that exciting or in great fights all about opinions but think have few gd guys comin through nxt few years
I like Simmons aswell but is he going to fight? He beat graf good win, didn't look great against wadi but got the KO than fights Courtney Richards so basically he has gone backwards. If I were Simmons and this may sound pathetic, but I would be eyeing up bellew. Okay bellew has fought at world level and might be a be a level above, but he looked atrocious against cleverly. And that would be a fight that could see Simmons go from british level to contender level if he wins.
I honestly don't rate bellew ether but bellew tginks he is world class fight wouldn't happen but needs to be fighting like 4 times a year nxt 2years build up his profile
But can They sellout stadiums? Can brophy or simmons, secure big money fights against bigger names even if they win the british title. will they put bums on seats, will they catch the imagination of the scottish public? :think will the promoters being fight it out to sign their names. I mean the only reason simmons and camacho got attention, was because they had a few twitter wars and 'things' were said. It was Mostly camacho promoting that one.
The problem is the promotional side a few of my mAtes like boxing but if Simmons walked by them in street they wouldn't know who he is
You are right in that punchers get more attention especially from casuals. A good skilled boxer lacking power can go all the way and be great but it takes longer for people to warm to them.
Casing point would be David Price, Huge power. Hyped as the next ruler of the heavyweight division. Fights a decent but old journeyman, gets ktfo. people remember him as a powerhouse with no jaw. who knows gary cornish, even if went under the radar and became british champ.
Look at simmons compared to haye when he was an upcoming cruiser, haye was known because he sparked guys out, right or wrongly punchers grab the publics attention
I think amatuer record may have something to do with the two we mentioned. but still good point mate.
I like brophy a lot and i think he can go far providing higher end fighters cant walk through him which is a concern because of his lack of power
